Decent quality hobby (or makeup) swabs will have a much tighter wind on the cotton, which means it'll last a lot longer before unraveling and it won't leave (as many) stray fibers stuck to your paint job. If they have something besides that default 'q-tip' style shape on the stick, it's usually a good indicator that they're better wound.

Personally, I use these ones. The pointed tip is nice for precise work, the flat round tip is nice for larger cleanup spots, and both ends stay together better than a regular swab.
