We bought these from Amazon: Labels
Then we slapped one on the top of each box and on the side of each box, like you say. Then we put one on the door to the corresponding room (on a piece of masking tape because it says they're "permanent" and we didnt want to screw up the door paint). It made life so much easier for us and for everyone helping us move.
