u/wumbatenforcer - the answer depends on your budget and what you mean by "inexpensive":

If it's less than $100, get a Rode TRS to TRRS adapter for your brother's mic, plug it into a phone and use a recording app such as Rode REC for iOS.
It it's $100, get a Tascam DR-05 and plug the mic into it
If it's $200, get a Tascam DR60D Mark II (with free headphones and SD card) and plug the mic into it
It it's $250, get a Zoom F1 with the SGH-6 shotgun and use it as a combination boom mic/recorder
