Sorry for the very late reply. Wood blocks can be used but put the knife in upside down (edge not resting on the wood). The enclosed space does tend to accumulate moisture though. Magnetic options are much better, in my opinion. A magnetic knife bar on the wall is great if you're up for drilling; you do get what you pay for so get something with nice strong magnets.
