This is a "stitch and glue" model kayak. They are beautiful boats. I built one about 5 years ago. I had never built a boat before, and had limited woodworking experience. It took me about 140 hours (I worked slowly) and cost about $1300 in materials.

The plans that are "free" appear to be pretty much useless. I built the Chesapeake 16 http://chesapeake16.tripod.com/id73.htm

The full plans for the Chesapeake are in the book. You can blow up the pages 250% to get full-sized plans for some of the smaller bits (cockpit coaming). I didn't use any resources besides the book. I had a great time building the boat, and it tracks very true (I've paddled through some fine swells on the west coast of Vancouver Island without a rudder, on week-long trips).

The major costs for building a stitch and glue are the wood - you really want the marine-grade mahogany for this, since it's 3 or 4mm thick, so any voids will compromise the integrity of your boat.

The second big cost item is the marine epoxy and fiberglass. Higher-end stuff is 5x the price of cheaper autobody resins. Using cheaper product is probably doable.
