I heard "Surely you are joking .." last month in audio, from a library, and l o v e d it. For greatest, for me it's The Pleasure of Finding Things out, which incorporates the cited lecture as Chapter 6. What a great lecture: ".. the imagination of nature is far, far greater than the imagination of man .. matter with curiosity .. it is possible to live and not to know .. If we want to solve a problem we have never solved before, we must leave the door to the unknown ajar .. to teach how doubt is not to be feared but welcomed and discussed ..." This is as good as it gets.

The Pleasure of Finding Things Out: The Best Short Works of Richard P. Feynman

One of the most interesting tidbits I learned from this book.
Take any number, near 50, lets call it X. Take the result of (X - 50) and add it to 25. Multiply that result by 100, then add (X - 50)^2.

For example lets square 62:

  • 62-50 is 12
  • plus 25 is 37
  • times 100 is 3700
  • and add 12^2 = 3844

It makes you look smart on the off chance someone brings up a similar calculation, and you are able to perform it in your head in just seconds.
