I personally use a blend of online and instructor-led training to train technical and sales staff in the 166 countries our company is present in. As long as the exams have carefully constructed questions, it is a very viable way of making sure your learners understand and know the material. If there is an urgent need, or a knowledge gap in a common subject matter or geography, I get on a plane and do an ILT.
As a side note, I also make sure I am doing the best I can, and constantly read books, websites, and listen to audiobooks on training and presenting. At the moment I'm reading two books and listening to one:
All are quite good so far, and focus on different aspects of training. As a new person to the field, I'd recommend the Great Workshops book as it gives very practical information about everything that goes into a successful ILT.
