The Shadow was a mystery-mam vigilante that originated in radio serials in the 1930s. Continuity was even harder to maintain back then, but long and the short, he had some sort of mystical ability to cloud mens minds.
There was a movie in the 1990s that was pretty B-grade starring Alec Baldwin.
