I’m looking for advice on the perfect extra(s) to complete the functionality of a Digitone / Digitakt pair. Skip down to just give specific synth recommendations/feedback
On its own, I love the digitakt, and the tone just adds more capability and really, just the two imo compromise a real instrument that you can jam, record, and create with.
I have an MPC Live and while it’s fun (and maybe the Force is better but it came out like within a month of getting the live.. grr), it’s just that, it isn’t easy or friendly to link via MIDI, the computer mode is bleh, and it really just encourages loading samples.
I got the digitakt (and now tone) because I absolutely love hardware, and it was quickly clear that not only did it help with workflow, creativity and output volume (amount), it’s also helping me understand MIDI, which really you don’t have to as well for VSTs in a DAW.

1st - Just the two alone should be good probably til something new comes along, but I also want to learn as much possible about circuitry and stuff like that - just like visually seeing all LFO elements on the digitakt makes them more easily understood if you’d never seen one before, at least imo, actually moving MIDI daisy chains and loops and using patch cables etc., I feel like I get a better feel for how the signal moves through a DAW as well. As it becomes more intuitive I find im more productive and happy with the results, and moving from standalone becomes easier (though I think Elektron did a very good job of making it easy to get work onto a computer, obviously as a sample but also as MIDI data, and it seems their program will only get better)..
So:
My thought is a perfect addition would be the Behringer Neutron (x1/2) and Type D. I also like the IK Uno, but idk if more sequencers makes sense.
If things like the Mini Brute, Volca Modular, Modal Skulpt, Novation Peak or Moog Mother-32 anyone has mixed in well, I’d also love to hear.
I also noticed many who get the digis get an Arturia Key Step - is something particularly useful about it? (Also there’s currently a used Roli on sale for $200.. anyone a fan?$
I have an Akai MPK 225 and a lower end Samson Graphite 49, which I assume is plenty - just thought it was odd that one was so often purchased with it.
Finally, any rack / mount recommendations? I’m considering getting a studio desk with rack space, though still I’ll have to get a modular stacking rack to hold everything.
