When I was a kid (early 90s) my parents wouldn't let me see anything rated R until I was in my teens. But I LOVED horror. I had a master list that I typed up myself on WordPerfect from this review book. I included every horror film that was in the book and even anything in the other genres that sounded scary that wasn't rated R. I included the director and how many stars it got and used it weekly at Video Factory and/or Movies Plus to pick up non-R horror. It's almost certainly long trashed which is unfortunate because it would be great to take a look back at it!

Poltergeist scared me the most as a child.

Others:

The Witches (based on the Roald Dahl story) scared me pretty good as a kid, particularly the scene at the beginning with the girl in the painting.

Gremlins (more horror-comedy, but again, as a kid was pretty scary and is still a holiday classic)

I seem to remember The Gate being on my list but it might have been a PG-13.

Jaws is still a classic. Didn't really scare me as a kid because I saw it more as action than horror, but looking back it's much scarier than I realized.

God I wish I could find that list!
