The more I hear about induction, the more I want to try using one.

As for replacing cookware, that's not totally necessary - you can buy steel plates that will conduct heat for those pans that wouldn't ordinarily work, like this one: http://www.amazon.com/VonShef-Induction-Diffuser-Stainless-Available/dp/B00DOZXK4Q

I'm a big fan of Vollrath for induction burners. They have a full range - from an inexpensive import model (not all that different from what you have) all the way up to heavy duty 3500 watt professional burners.

::::::

I haven't used them, so I can't speak to them first-hand, but I've seen induction ready heat diffusers available - I wonder if they might be able to even out the heat on your existing burner. Cheap enough that it maybe worth a try. Something like this:

Silicon Mat? Buy a metal induction heat diffuser?

I'm obviously late to see this but wanted to address that it does not work naturally on induction cook tops. It would require an interface disc: http://www.amazon.com/VonShef-Induction-Diffuser-Stainless-Available/dp/B00DOZXK4Q/ref=pd_sim_79_1?ie=UTF8&dpID=21GFHWfKpzL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL160_SR160%2C160_&refRID=0WZRTHWVADKEDWC0VFBP
Also, I can't believe you put the whole thing in the oven! but I'm glad you were brave enough to try! It is definitely meant for stovetop use above all.

Or $30 for stainless induction elements. Not perfect but they let you use any pan by creating a thermal element. Something like this Induction Hob Heat Diffuser Stainless Steel https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00DOZXK4Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_J1oMzb9RFC1JR

You can get something like this. I mostly use cast iron myself, though.

Worst case, you can use something like this.
