I don't know if Boston A26 are any warmer than the Debut B6.2 or not, but for $50 you may as well try them.

Or you can get new Boston A series towers for the price of new Debut B6.2:

  • BOSTON ACOUSTICS A250 Dual 5.25" 2-Way $268 pair bogo.
  • BOSTON ACOUSTICS A360 Dual 6.5" 3-Way $329 pair bogo.

There are many other choices with the Debut B6.2 at full $299 MSRP price. The Debut B6.2 may go lower than the Boston A26 so add a subwoofer if you want bass and it will go much lower than the Elacs anyway. The Debut B6.2 were a good buy when they were $150 over the holidays, not so good at $299.

6.5" Ascend CBM-170 SE $299 plus shipping. Neutral to slightly warm sound with a linear frequency response. My speaker of choice for mostly music. Internet direct are a great value since they cut out the middleman and can compare to $500 speakers. As with many good bookshelf speakers they are designed to be used with a subwoofer.

    Wharfedale are usually warm:

  • 5.25" Diamond 10.1 (Black) or (Rosewood) $175.
  • 5.25" Diamond 220 $249
  • 6.5" Diamond 225 $349.

5.25" Wavecrest Audio HVL-1, and order on sale at Ascend $80 each + shipping, "budget/baby Ascends" from the same speaker designer. Neutral sound with a linear frequency response. Best mids under $200 which many speakers in the price range lack.

    Boston Bogo Sale: 5.25" Boston A25 $149 pair. (6.5" Boston A26 $195 pair)

DIY Speaker Kits: Add around $50/75+ for tools and supplies if you don't have them. Kit includes pre-cut cabinets. Glue, clamp, solder, paint, assemble. Comparable to built speakers costing two to three times as much.

  • 5" C-Notes $100. A good low end for their size.
  • 6.5" Dayton Audio BR-1 $195. Cabinets are already built and painted. Lower bass than many other speakers in the size and price range. Great option if you will not be adding a subwoofer.

Towers: Jamo S 809 $249 pair walnut + shipping or Jamo S 807 DUAL $179 pair free shipping.

    Neutral to bright:

  • Infinity sale: 5.25" Infinity Reference 152 $139. 6.5" Infinity Reference 162 $175. Either with Infinity Reference RC252 $179 center channel speaker.
  • Klipsch sale: 5.25" RP-150M (Cherry) $289 or 6.5" RP-160M (Ebony) $349.

Yea absolutely 2 speakers sub and amp (a 2.1 setup,) could yield you fantastic sound, especially with an 800 buck budget, that's more than I have in my system. Kef has a great sale going in this holiday season, check them out. I am also partial to Wharfedales, you can get the Diamond 10.1 for 300 on amazon, and they will blow you away with their detail and clarity.

Throw in a nice energy sub for 200 to round out dat bass.http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=82-269-020

The find a good amp and whatever you like for a source, and your system will make Bose sound like a bad joke.

You can take your budget even furthur if you are open to used components and take the time to scout out craigslist and the like.

Check out /r/budgetaudiophile for more component suggestions in the sidebar. I am very very partial to the sound of the Wharfedales, but there are a ton of other grwat speakers in the price range. Check out the PSB image 1b for a slightly more aggressive sound. Good luck and have fun, it's addicting!

When you start getting down to looking at things on the scope level, I tend to believe that stuff.

HOWEVER,

I'm mainly wary of doing it because I'm concerned I'll foul something up in my table doing it myself. You have a friend willing to do the mod and for free. Doesn't sound like you have anything to lose by trying it besides the use of your table for a bit.

Alternatively, you could go the preamp / receiver route which is how I run it (and it sounds quite damn good to me). But that means more gear / wires running everywhere / power draw.

If you decide to change out your active monitors, consider these Wharfedale Diamonds. I picked up a set a few years ago, and am often blown away by the sound for the price:

I just inherited a Marantz 2238b receiver and only have this set of two speakers at the moment. How can I best integrate this into my setup, and what purchases if any should I make?

In this price range, you could also get an SMSL SA-50 and Wharfedale Diamond 10.1s:

https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B0079XG4TW/

The Wharfedales are a bit large for desktop speakers, but they're very good. The amp is 50W/ch, better than most powered speakers.

You'd still need a pre-amp, however. I don't know what's available there; I don't own any vinyl.

Edit: KEF Q100s are also available for $250. These are $550 speakers marked down for clearance after a new model was released. I have both speakers. The KEFs are in my home theater; they have great clarity and presence. They're a little dry, it's great for audio and video soundstage. The Wharfedale's are a little less accurate but warmer; I use those on my PC, where the nearfield experience is what I want. Both have excellent bass extension.

A buddy of mine has [these ](http://www.Wharfedale.com/ - Diamond 10.1 (Rosewood) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0079XG4TW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_wPKSybTXTC9S4) and they are damn good. Granted it's paired with Technics 1200 and a vintage Pioneer amp.

I personally have a very budget with Micca MB42x which would be on the bottom end of your budget. While good performers, your budget allows for better.

Hi All,

I'm not an audiophile so I need your expert help!

My wife recently got a turntable and she's currently just got it hooked up to our TV soundbar via a preamp. Her birthday is coming up so I wanted to get her an amplifier and some bookshelf speakers. She likes the MCM style for the house so I wanted to get an amplifier with tubes for the aesthetic and novelty but i'm not sure what amp to buy.

I've already purchased these Wharfdale diamon 10.1 speakers and I noticed that it says the recommended amplification is 20-100W. I found this pretty affordable Monoprice amp but it says it's only 10W per channel. Is that correct? will this not work with the speakers I've purchased? Based on the setup they show on the monoprice website it seems like it's designed for bookshelf speakers. Am I missing something with this power output rating?

You'll see the biggest jump just getting a decent amp/receiver and speakers. The turntable isn't great but if you're going straight from the turntable into powered speakers, I'd almost guarantee powered speakers will be the weak-point.

Keep in mind that receiver only does audio, not video, which could be a consideration for later upgrades.
