What is your budget? USA? Do you have or will be adding a subwoofer? What are you powering them with? Would you consider floor standing instead of bookshelf on speaker stands?

For that price you've got quite a few good options.

First things first, you need a receiver. Having a full size receiver that can support surround will be perfect in case you ever want to have a surround setup.

You have loads of options for speakers.

What sound signature do you want? I'll give you a few options to look through.

HSU HB-1 MK2 are fantastic speakers. They dig extremely deep, and are a lot of fun to listen to. The horn is designed different from every other horn I've heard. These will fill a room with no problem, and it won't every sound bright or shouty. I absolutely love them. These would be my pick in this price range.

Ascend CBM-170 are another very good option. They don't have a ton of bass, but instead focus more on midrange. If you think you'll be adding a sub in the future, these could be a very good option.

Elac Debut B6.2. If you don't want to add a sub but you want bass, these are for you. They have tons of bass, and are generally smooth throughout besides that.

The Wharfedale Diamond 225 is a fantastic speaker. The midrange really is the star of the show with these. They have a sweet and smooth midrange, with a relaxed top end. You could listen for days without fatigue. These are a 'safe bet', meaning you won't be offended by them at all.

I haven't heard these Elacs but they're popular. Unfortunately I can't really help besides that.

Edit: don't forget speaker cable to hook it all up.

There's lots of options on turntables and given your budget it shouldn't be hard to get something nice. You may want to consider something with auto-start/stop and return given your uncle's condition. But there's a lot of great brands - U Turn, Pro-Ject, Rega, Marantz, Denon, etc. I'd suggest spending $250-$400 of the budget on the table. Wouldn't go much more than that. Let me know your thoughts on the automatic features and if you think that is a necessity and I can recommend something specific.

Receiver: Onkyo TX-NR575 - $298

The Onkyo is nice because it hits a lot of of your needs - phono input, Aux input for iPod (and bluetooth capabilities for newer phones/ipods), and video sources. It also comes in at a fairly reasonable price point.

For speakers, take a look at the Wharfedale 225s. Great speakers at $500. Honestly, from what you've mentioned about space and the trailer, a bass unit (subwoofer) probably isn't necessary. These will put out enough bass for the space.

Very sorry to hear your uncle is in declining health, though. Sending all my best to you and him. You're a great nephew to even be thinking of something like this for him.

NAD 316bee V2 for the amp

For speakers it's tough as it's super subjective. Around your price range (factoring in that NAD or something similar) I've enjoyed the Martin Logan Motion 15, Elac B6, and Wharfedale 225. That said I would try auditioning anything before buying, it can be tough depending on where you live though.

I would say to get the Denon X1300 for ~$308 shipped from A4L. It’s a factory refurb receiver (like new and inspected by the factory). It’s much better than the S720z

I’d look at the Wharfedale Diamond 225’s (some of the stats on the Amazon page are incorrect, here are the full stats.

I like them better than the UB5’s (the UB5’s are harder to drive and start to sound bad out at like 90dB).

I would also look at the HTD Level Three’s. They competed on even footing with the Diamond 10 series, and you can but together a 3.0 right now (spend a bit more than $600 for the ebony finish).

A multichannel receiver would be useful to connect the subwoofer later on.. Stereo receivers generally don't have bass management. They work just fine in stereo mode, so if you can get one cheaply, make sure it does have bass management and get it.

As far as the speakers go, I would recommend a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 220s, leaving some money out of the budget for the receiver. If that is going to be even less than $100, get the 225s.

Subwoofers cost $500 at the very least, anything less is just bad (or isn't capable of reproducing low frequencies), so save some money and add it later.

Hey all,

So I'm looking at picking up a pair of Wharfdale Diamond 225's and a Polk Audio PSW Series PSW505. The sub was a last minute addition but I was wondering what receiver I can use that will be compatible with what I have listed above? I'm not hooking anything more or less up to it, just a simple 2.1 system.

I was initially going to get an Emotiva Audio A-300 but that only works for a 2.0 system something in a similar price range would suffice. Thanks!

You could look at Wharfedale's diamond series speakers (220 or 225) to stick with the brand. Alternatives I also enjoy are Q acoustics 3020 or concept 20, Dali Zensor, Sonus Faber Principia 1. I would always recommend listening to a couple of different speakers before actually settling on a specific set though, maybe your tastes are completely different from mine. If there are no dealers near you, you could always try to select your top 3 in your price bracket, order all of them and send 2 pairs back ;).

As far as cheap amps go, I only tested a SMSL SA-60 which seemed a little weak with some bigger speakers (could've been a bad unit since I've heard so many good things about those little amps, who knows) and upgraded that to a Pro-ject Stereo Box S. I actually like the Pro-ject amp for small setups. (comes with a tiny remote and has 2 sets of RCA inputs). I found that I didn't need anything else with bookshelf speakers up to around 1.200€ after testing a couple of full size amps that were supposed to be "so much better".

Good Luck
