To feel more comfortable moving to a foreign country (I am from the UK and have lived in China and currently live in Sweden) I can recommend doing research. Lots of research.

Here’s a huge plus side to living abroad: locals are often more forgiving of your aspie eccentricities as they will chalk it up to “culture”. You can get away with more social mistakes!

I can recommend the “Xenophobe’s Guide to the Kiwis” book for learning about the culture.

I have these for just about every culture I interact with, and I’ve checked with good friends from those cultures and the content is pretty accurate.

It sucks that your parent prefers New Zealand to Japan, but hey, New Zealand might be easier in terms of language. Plenty of time for you to go to Japan when you are older. I always wanted to go to Japan, finally made it at 26 and loved it. It’s worth the wait! Hang on in there.
