Big thanks to Corsair for sponsoring most of this rig.

I'm from the UK too, XFX cards are cheaper than the reference designs

How much for a R9 290, used but working well (This one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HWSATI6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=9 )

A 290? Are you talking about this? Its a bit pricey isn't it?

On amazon for 279.99 right now. Not even showing that low on my camelizer. I was waiting for black Friday/CM, but it's tempting.

It's one of the cheaper options but it will work just fine (most coolers are overkill unless you are pushing your CPU to the absolute limits). You could upgrade to a bigger radiator but a single unit will be fine.

Those GPUs are not necessary if you're okay with having good settings, but if (like me) you prefer to go for maxed settings - great for bragging rights - you would definitely benefit from checking out cards like the Sapphire Tri-x R9 290 and the XFX Black Edition 290

Yeah, two R9 290 cards at 750W is too close to call, but it might work. There are power requirement calculators out there like this one that can help you figure out what's really enough.

The Corsair 540 has awesome airflow, you'll be fine there.

If you're not going to go with Step Up, the R9 290 is the definite winner. And here's the other thing to consider: the new NVidia series is just around the corner, but that doesn't mean it will be the performance-to-price ratio champion right away. They'll probably be expensive at first.

You'll be very happy with an R9 290, trust me. A model like this one doesn't cost too much, performs very well for the price, has an awesome cooler, and leaves Crossfire option as an option later (power supply notwithstanding). If you don't want to wait, don't wait! (Also, if you're using a 1080p 60Hz monitor, getting a better video card than an R9 290 wouldn't even make a gigantic difference on your screen. You'd approach 60 FPS in almost anything!)
