We would take a small training treat and put it in the palm of our hand with fingers closed around it and tell him gentle, and he had to use either his tongue or nose to get to the treat from inside our hand, instead of trying to nip or nibble at fingers to get it. We started focusing on gentle (as well as a few other critical commands like sit, stay, off, down, come/heel, bed, leave it, drop it etc... the basics are really really important for larger dogs) as soon as we brought him home knowing he would eventually grow to be a pretty big boy, and he took to it pretty fast.

We carried the behavior through with larger things by giving him a toy or larger treat and only releasing when he would softly take it from us and do so slowly and with control. It's funny to see how excited he gets sometimes but will do everything he can to control himself when getting something, and then dart off somewhere because he just can't hold it in anymore lol. It gives you a sense of appreciation and respect to see your animal make decisions around their behavior because they know what you expect, and what nets them those tasty treats.
