I feel your pain mate. I hope this will help you be an excellent sysadmin. G/L and keep us updated!

Oh and for your reference I would suggest you check out the following in the programming area:

  • Windows - Powershell

  • Unix - Bash shell scripting or ksh scripting

  • Web - I think most sysadmins enjoy PHP, however I would highly recommend python if you move to the web space

One last thing is if you're in the UNIX space I would recommend this book (as a hardcopy reference): UNIX System Administration Handbook

You definitely want this book for debian
The Debian Administrator's Handbook

You might also look for a book to teach you the basics of command line tools and system configuration files. I used to have a book I really liked but its too old to be found these days.

edit:
This is the one we used at university
UNIX System Administration Handbook
I'm not sure I would recommend it though as I'm not sure its the best. There is plenty others out there.

You should also try to compile your own kernel at some point just so you know how it is done and how you can tune a kernel if you need to.

This book is full of unix and linux tips. I suggest this book over all others I've read. It is an immense help for daily tasks as well as stuff you don't see too often.

Reading something like UNIX Sys Admin Handbook couldn't hurt.

Whenever I see a post about how printing sucks, I pull out my 2nd edition of Nemeth et al, and turn to page 580 where it lists lpc as "flakiest program of the year" for 1985-1994 inclusive.

Printing has ALWAYS sucked. CUPS was the biggest step forward, and it has hauled printing forward into where it should have been in 1994. sigh
