I got my Sammy at Petco and while he was kind of skittish and lethargic for the first week, after seven or so days in a filtered, heated, 5 gallon tank he was the coolest little guy- loved to come up and say hi, watched people all the time, super interactive. Like having a puppy in fish form. Also he was the cutest mofo ever.

That said, I'm only buying fish from a local place I found now, just because they're so awesome. Comparable prices, but way more knowledgeable and more selection; all their fish are happy and healthy (none of those I-wish_I-were-dead bettas!) and just a cool place to go look at stuff. If you can find a place like that, I'd highly recommend it!

*I almost forgot about the tank! I have this one, with a custom-cut glass lid that a local shop did for me for $15, and I have this heater. I LOVE it, it works great, and Sams looked so elegant in there (now that Sammy's gone, it's the home to two dwarf puffers who also seem to love it). Some may say that heater is overkill, but I went through three others of increasing wattage (including the one made for the tank), and none had the kind of horsepower I needed to get my tank to a safe temperature up from the ~50-60 degrees it is in my room in winter. When I was younger, I had this tank,, which comes with the lid already. I think that lid is really pretty important- my first betta died by jumping, and aside from being really sad, I found him in the morning, after he'd dried...to the carpet...and was a bit difficult to peel off. So kind of added insult to injury.

Either way, I'd definitely recommend starting with a kit, as it really just tends to be cheaper to get them all together. I like real plants, but I always ask for low-light ones myself-I am just too lazy to get extra lighting! But the real plants can help keep things happy and healthy, especially in a tank that small. I use sand over a planting substrate, because sand was nice and soft for my froggy and the substrate was what the plants wanted.

Hope this helped! I realize it's a TON of info. TL;DR, Petco fish can be fine if you don't pick a sick one and take care of them; 5g tank should really be the minimum; tank kits are going to be easier and cheaper; don't forget a heater!

  1. I recommend this toaster from personal experience but unfortunately it's $60. :/ My mom has this toaster and swears by it, and it's only $40 though!

  2. As for stuff to hang... Ive got a lot of ideas because Ive been looking for me too!!! i love really interesting pieces like this and this. these are really cheap and popular around here (i think theyd be super adorable on the fridge!) I had chalkboard in my old office/kitchen and I loved it. This is kind of silly but Ive always wanted one, haha. You'll probably need a clock, too.

...sorry if i put too many. I love looking at this stuff. If thats cheating, feel free to only count the first haha

  3. Hard to pick an item without knowing price range! Haha

Hello! The tetra 3 gal is the best choice imo of the 3. If you don't want to go all out, then this hood and basic tank. Petsmart has small 5 lb bags of white or black sand if you don't want to do gravel and depending on what all you will have in you tank, I've found sand to be pretty easy to deal with when cleaning tanks. I'm a big fan of Hydor heaters and I've heard a lot of good reviews on Eheim too.

In all honesty, if you are able to go just a little bit bigger, I'd suggest a Fluval Spec V. I have 3 tanks and 2 of them are the Spec V's. They're sleek, have a nice pump that has not only adjustable flow, but has a directional nozzle, you can fit a Hydor heater next to the outtake tubing, and already has a light. If you get that with a heater, you can take a small bag of sand, the Sponge Bob pineapple home, some colorful silk plants, and a moss ball or two you'd be all set as a beginner and not have it take up much more room. If you do get a snail, perhaps your son would name it Gary? (the snail in Spongebob? haha not necessary but it is possible to have a vacuum to eat any leftovers the betta doesn't eat.)

Just remember that if you move a fish tank, you'll want to drain out some of the water to make moving easier as well as safer. I take it this will be pretty sudden so a fishless cycling won't really be a thing so please make sure to have betta water conditioner.

Good luck!

alright!

So after many months of planning and figuring out what i waned to do, I finally decide to bite the bullet and get into the planted tank hobby (I kept ranchus before this).

If you guys have any tips or anything advice that would help me out much appreciation!

For right now I am waiting for the drawf hairgrass carpet to grow out, and my piece of wood to become waterlogged so it doesn't float.
I tied down java moss so the wood looks like a tree.

Dont judge me, I know its hella cliche, but i think it would look good.

I am replacing the HOB with a canister filther (Finnex px-360) and using lily glass pipes for my intake and output, so i can achieve that more minimalistic vibe.

For those wondering my CO2 set up, I am using [this] (https://aquaforestaquarium.com/collections/co2-systems/products/archaea-co2-regulator-pro-single-gauge-fits-cga-320), so far its pretty good. It has the adapter so i can connect to a 5lb paint ball co2 canister. I have it connected to a timer, so its pretty hands free system.

The only thing I want to change is my CO2 diffuser, its good for its price point(only 10.99). But I feel like if I spend a little more I could get something better.

If you guys want links to what I have bought:

CO2 regulator

Glass lily pipes (still havent arrived so I dont know if they are good, I have heard mixed reviews about it)

CO2 Indicator

Canister filter

I use the Python and am super happy with it. I don't have any experience with the Aqueon unfortunately so can't comment on it.

I know you're not looking for reasons to spend more money, but I will say there are a couple things for the Python that make a huge difference. First, I feel like the hook attachment is almost required. It makes it so much easier to use the system without getting water everywhere. My only other initial problem was that water would often come rushing out of the hook so fast that it would dislodge plants, however I saw a great tip in a YouTube video that this filter tube (70/110 size) fits perfectly onto the end of the hook and is great for diffusing the water. The conbination of these two products makes the Python a pretty perfect system in my opinion.

In regards to matching water temp, I use an infrared thermometer to match the water coming out of the facet before adding it to the tank. Has worked flawlessly as far as I can tell.

Also just to comment on the other posters, I haven't personally experienced any trouble just adding Prime directly to the tank and then immediately filling it up. Haven't had any issue with flow strength either and I'm on the third floor of my building with the tube stretching the full 25' length to reach my tank room.

I and my wife are aquarists. I own a koi beta myself and it's really common to run into people that think that betas are just designed to look good. In my case, I have a 1.8-gallon classic bowl, with a marimo, a light bubbler, and some decor she can hide behind. I suggest you get a tank similar to this. Get a marimo a small bubbler, depending on how cold your house gets a small heater. After that just get some easy to clean rock and some decor your beta and you can be happy with. It may cost some cash but if done right your beta will look much better, instead of a fish that practically sits all day it will move around and depending upon the attitude will even play or act friendly. There actually intelligent for domesticated fish so if they are happy they can pick up a personality more so then most.

Edit: Enough of the attacks. I'm looking into it. I've never had any issue with my fish in the past and they have all lived long fishy lives. If there is a better way then that's cool, we will learn and improve but attacking me about it does nothing to help. Please stop.

In the picture submitted you can clearly see a healthy betta fish in the top 3 pictures. Those pictures are from May 2017 when he was first brought home from the pet store. The bottom 3 pictures are from last night.
This is a betta fish. I wasn't aware of the type of care that these fish truly need. I did however do weekly 100% water changes adding conditioner to the water each time. I fed him 2x every day. He was active sometimes but preferred to stay in some artificial plants found in the tank. Last night I changed the water and that's when I noticed something was truly wrong. After I put him in the tank it stayed at the surface and I could see a clear struggle to breathe. Or as you can see in the pictures, it sunk to the bottom and stayed there for a while. I tried feeding it but it would not move. It did not even acknowledge the food.
I am ashamed to admit that I have yet to get a kit to test these values so I am unaware.
Currently it is in a 1.5 gallon tank. This tank has been set up since May 14 2017.
I do not have a filter. Again, I've been misinformed about the care that these fish need. I read online that if you do weekly 100% water changes you do not need a filter.
There is only 1 fish in the tank.
I've had this fish for about 4 months
I have added a new betta hammock last night. Also, I added a heater about a week ago. I also noticed that this new conditioner that I bought has white flakes in it? I have purchased this conditioner before and it did not have white flakes in it. It is this one https://www.chewy.com/aqueon-betta-bowl-plus-water/dp/130982?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=f&utm_content=Aqueon&utm_term=&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI8suZoZmT1gIVm7XACh2R3wpYEAQYAyABEgIhM_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
I know I have failed as a fish owner and I did not realize the damage that I have caused it. I know it is not much but I recently order a new tank and am waiting for it to arrive. Which looks like this https://www.amazon.com/Aquaview-Gallon-Aquarium-Lighting-Internal/dp/B002DRLESA/ref=sr_1_6?s=pet-supplies&ie=UTF8&qid=1504791599&sr=1-6&keywords=fish+tank
Any help is greatly appreciated !! I would really love if I could save my fish even though my neglect may have caused severe damage. Thank you.

u/sam_eats_children · 2 pointsr/Aquariums

I've listed pretty much all I can think of. :)

The tank from Amazon will work great, Marineland Eclipse systems are very good tanks and have good filters. I personally don't like the hex shape much, I find it obstructs the view and seems less panoramic. I prefer something like the Marineland Eclipse 5 gallon Corner Aquarium. Just remember to cycle it before you put fish in and you're all good!

Another option for tanks is to find a 'plain' tank, just the aquarium with no filter or hood equipment, and choose your own filter and lid; it might be cheaper if you can find the stuff.. You can usually find them in 2.5 or 5.5 gallon sizes and higher. Some come with glass plates as a lid, some have to be bought separately or made (or you can just use plastic wrap as a lid to keep the betta from jumping out!). If you go this route, the filter I would suggest is the Red Sea Deco Art Nano Filter. I'm just suggesting this because it might be cheaper if you are on a budget.

u/AuntChiladas · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Hello! You mentioned that you had allergies, so I recommend this to keep a lovely little beta fish in because it's super cute. However, in reality -- living in New England, I'm sure you're adjusted to the fact that we actually have all four seasons. Sometimes, it's not practical to use your oven to cook so I really, really swear by my George Foreman.

Best of luck!!!!

u/costallee · 1 pointr/bettafish

Honestly, your best bet for budget options would be Petsmart's Top Fin aquariums, or Petco's Aqueon aquariums. :( Both brands have relatively cheap 5 gallon tanks that you can buy. Those are really your best bets. If you are able to save up for a while, or get your sister to pitch in, you could look into like the fluval edge or even one of the penn-plax aquariums.

u/DerpyCubone · 1 pointr/Aquariums

Hello! I'm looking to start a 20G tank with a Betta and a few tank mates that will play nice. Along with some easy to care for live plants. I've found 2 starter kits on Amazon and was wanting to see if these would be good place to start. There is this one and then This second one. I don't think either comes with a heater so I would have to snag that. Basicly wondering if the filters and lights will be enough or if it would be way cheaper to buy all the parts by themselves.

u/szor · 1 pointr/Wishlist

It depends. I suggest checking out the Walstad method if you would be interested in a shrimp tank. Shrimp can do well in a jar or bowl with plants, no filter, no light, presuming you have the bowl in a spot with enough light for the plants. Some plants would do fine with just regular office lighting, but others are picky.

Fish usually require a filter because they're dirty poop machines and benefit from the current. Betta fish like calm water and can live in a bowl (that's why you see them in those depressing cups at pet stores) without filtration, too. They require a lot more water changes because again, poop machine and nothing to stir up oxygen into water.

/r/shrimptank and /r/aquariums are good resources if you're looking to get set up. If you want to go bigger, I have this tank for my desk. It's silent and acts as a great lamp and I've never once did a complete water change and I've had it over a year (just topping off tank when it evaporates).

u/Surrealle01 · 1 pointr/Aquariums

5 gal kits are pretty common. Something like this would work:

Penn Plax Curved Corner Glass Aquarium Kit, Filter, LED Light, Float Glass for Maximum Viewing 5 Gallon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0069RTFB8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fGzUBb7D84V60

If it needs to be said, their 7.5 or 10 gallon option would be better, if you can swing it. You'll also want to direct the output of that filter towards a wall to minimize current, at least initially. (It's easy, it swivels).

Edit: Just saw that you want a hidden filter. Those types of tanks tend to cost more, but if that's okay then the fluval spec V tanks are a good option too. You'll likely need a heater for whatever tank you go with, too. Fyi

u/MrDegausser · 1 pointr/bettafish

YMMW but I use Jungle Fungus Tablets for fungus and popeye and other ailments. So far they've worked very well!

Epsom salt is also a must have for various ailments as well.

People will definitely debate about aquarium salt. I've used it and it's worked, but you definitely have to use it very sparingly will bettas IMHO.

u/r1ckums · 1 pointr/PlantedTank

The Spec tanks are nice if you’re looking for built in filtration, just find a flat heater of some sort to fit in the back bay if you’re looking to hide it. I do that in my 5 gallon Top Fin “all in one”.

If you’re looking to do everything on your own, Amazon sells UNS tanks that are gorgeous (currently waiting on my 7.1!)

u/Helpful24 · 1 pointr/rescuecats

The cats I have "rescued" have went from me to a no kill shelter because I was taking care of them in the alley. My own cats are inside and have never been out since I've had them. The one I took into the rescue last was placed in the bathroom when I took him in (for isolation). The director had let me know that when they went to see him he was gone (from a closed room). He actually went up into the ceiling vent! Can you believe? I went to visit him after he was fixed and incorporated into one of the open cat rooms. I was able to pet him still while no one else was. I went to visit again after a while and he made some more progress. Last time I looked on their website he had been adopted.

The reason I tell you is because as painful as it is to hear the yowling you have actually saved her. Maybe try giving her a stuffed animal that you have slept with, something to cuddle with. She might have had other cats with her outside and be lonely for them. Also is there a window that she can see out of without climbing the walls or being able to open it? She doesn't need to be outside but cats do like to look outside. I also leave the TV on for my cats. I don't want your mother to be upset so maybe something like this would help. I think the kitty needs a distraction. Also I leave my radio on to music (classic rock like Journey, Queen - my preference). No one likes to be in a closed and quiet room all alone, but don't worry because that is why you are making it so nice for her. How is she when you are in the room? Also I saw someone recommended Feliway and I make sock babies for them. Take some old socks and tie them inside a tube sock (a longer sock) and tie a knot in the end. It is like a kitty body pillow. If you sleep with the socks in your bed first for a day or two then they will smell like you.

bettafix and salt are more effective against bacterial infections, and this looks more like something fungal to me. What kind of medications are available to you?

The ragged fins and pinholes do indicate finrot, so the waterchanges, salt, and IAL will prob help with that. They might not help enough to also let your buddy get over the fungal infection on his own. Any chance you can order something like fungus eliminator or API fungus cure?

u/FartingWhooper · 2 pointsr/bettafish

Here is a 2 on sale. I think you're a great fish owner and your current set up is fine with attention. But if you find a 2.5 I definitely think you should upgrade. It isn't much bigger to you but a big difference to him. And it will be easier to care for.

The good thing with that one is there are no corners that I can see. Mine always fights himself in the corners of tanks.

u/ScienceGeek386 · 2 pointsr/siacoin

Seems like I will start this project since there is plenty of people supporting this. I mean is not a bad idea, and it will be a cheaper response to the new obelisk immersion, Here is a list of the things (materials) I am thinking in using:

-Obelisk SC1 3400$: https://www.amazon.com/Obelisk-SC1-Miner-Batch-Hand/dp/B07K8WYMP1/ref=sr_1_fkmrnull_1?keywords=obelisk+sc1&qid=1550978014&s=gateway&sr=8-1-fkmrnull

-10 Gallons of mineral Oil 89.99$: 2 x https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VNI1JH6/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A394TN1KG6QJPX&psc=1

Obelisk SC1 Immerse in mineral oil (Ghetto Style) Total: 3603$

I think that is pretty much it, do you think there is anything else that could be included in this list?

Is something like this lid good for putting a good light source on? I was looking at some of the finnex lights and they appear to need a clear lid like this.

u/snowe2010 · 2 pointsr/Aquariums

Hmm. yes that does seem to be something wrong with a fin. Though I don't know how to tell for sure. I'm not sure what to do. Putting him in a hanging net is a start. I would suggest getting a breeding net just for cases like this, it's pretty useful if you need to dose as well.

You can learn a lot by joining us over in the IRC channel as well. There's a link in the Helpful Links section of the sidebar.

u/HtpoHzwgBuuu · 1 pointr/PlantedTank

I use one of these, don't know if it's available where you live. It's a bowl the size of a regular food plate where you hatch brine shrimp. It has a clever mechanism that makes the hatched shrimp go for the middle of the bowl where you can easily lift them out with a little sieve.

If you regularly clean it, it doesn't smell at all. Con is, you don't get a whole lot of shrimp, I'd say one of these bowls, filled one time, yields enough shrimp to feed 15-20 fish in the 2-4cm range for 2 days, then you need to clean it and refill it.

Edit: it is available in the US if that's where you're at. Some more info.

Fluval Spec 3

Best tank I've ever used. Built-in 3-stage filter concealed in the back, plus space for a 25w heater in the same compartment the pump is in.

If you get this tank I reccomend two things:

Get a Fluval Pre-filter sponge to place over the pump-output to diffuse the current

Set the pump to the lowest possible flow (It's still pretty strong so that's why you'll need the pre-filter sponge)

u/Ciscokid311 · 2 pointsr/Aquariums

I use this from amazon. Super easy i leave it out on my kitchen counter and 24 hours later they are hatched. Theres some you tube videos out there with this specific model. No air necessary. After 2 days i clean and set up again with new eggs!

u/kmn086 · 2 pointsr/bettafish

Thanks, I'll definitely consider that. A similar one I've been looking at just now that I'm considering is the Fluval Spec 2.6 gallon. I've been reading good things about it. Any experience with Fluval at all?

u/DreamGirly_ · 6 pointsr/Aquariums

well how big is it?

https://www.amazon.com/Fluval-12857-View-Aquarium-4-Gallon/dp/B009ZKZHQ8

so it's 4 gallons and would still need a heater. It's bigger than 2,5 gal, but also smaller than 5gal so on the small side. There is plenty of horizontal space, at least if the sides are thick enough so the betta can still turn its ass... the bg thing is pretty cool.

u/s_s · 1 pointr/Aquariums

No one really knows because putting fish in a glass box isn't an exact science, but 36" (90cm) minimum is the recommendation I trust. Still 30" is better than 8.4"

If it's too short a tank to get good schooling behavior from them, then I really wouldn't do it.

u/Vettit · 1 pointr/Aquariums

The picture is of this tank, a 4 gallon that I painted the over the stock leafy nonsense a while back when it was a small salt water tank. the stock LEDs are not super powerful, so I just have some dwarf val grass, and marimo moss that was flattened out.

Anyway, I got 10 of each shrimp and I am hoping they will breed. I also have a 55 gallon that I am dedicating to one of the color variants. The 55 gallon has a lot of green in it, so I am thinking maybe the blue shrimp would pop in there(also they are the ones I want to breed the most and hopefully the larger sized aquarium will facilitate this), and maybe the red in the tank in the photograph. Ultimately, I keep 3-5 shrimp in the jarrariums I make, I just wanted to get a good stock of breeding shrimp in different colors. I plan to keep the neon yellows in a large jarrarium I am planning.

Any thoughts? Welcoming any ideas to improve the pictured tank. I am prone to putting TOO much stuff in tanks(plants/rocks/driftwood) and this one is the most minimal I have done. Fighting the urge to load it up with more drift wood.

\>fish bowl

great idea BUT I see that all these fish bowls - like salad bowls have a flat bottom = image will be deformed :/

Baby platy for sure! If you want to really make sure they live, you can get a nursery net to hold the babies until they're really big enough to swim with the adults. You do have to feed them itty bitty crumbled amounts of food. It sticks on the inside wall of the aquarium. This one is my favorite:

Here's a link to a 7.5 gallon version in case you are interested. I use it as a betta tank and it works great.

u/gaelicsteak · 2 pointsr/bettafish

I have the 3 gallon version of this (I don't know if the 3 gallon is made anymore.) You should also get him a heater, gravel, and a thermometer. I support the Craigslist route as well, you can find some really good deals there.

So which "corporate entity that only cares about profit" would you prefer? Amazon, WalMart, or Tetra (Who seem to have discontinued that model.)

u/diabetic_debate · 1 pointr/PlantedTank

I have a 20 long and I use the planted+ 30"and petco 30"glass top. The lights sit directly on the glass (I removed the legs).

It works beautifully.

For the 37 gallon, is it a column? I have a 37 column and 37 is kinda a weird number, which is why I ask. If so, you'll want to get a mix of high, mid, and low swimmers. Mine has psuedomogil furcata rainbows for the high, killi oryzias woworae for mid, peacock gudgeons for low, and blue neon stripe gobies for the BBA problem I had some time ago. I also have a cholla tree skeleton (roots, trunk, and limbs) that looks really nice in it (purchased on etsy for about $40). You could go with the typical schooling fish, but you'll probably have those in your nano and diversity is nice.

I like this nano: https://smile.amazon.com/Penn-Plax-Radius-Curved-Aquarium-7-5-Gallon/dp/B0069RTX3I/
The filter is comes with is decent but the light is meh, unless you want to use to supplement your main/real/big boy light

It’s a new tank lol I just set up 6g (24 litre) tank, with water from the tank mechanical filter? Do you ever have an issue with breeding behavior since you have the attachment for filling ? https://www.amazon.com/Python-Hands-Free-Spill-Aquarium-Green/dp/B01654SSXA/ref=pd_bxgy_199_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01654SSXA&pd_rd_r=7PW6EGCHF65V7YEA0EAE&pd_rd_w=CXvvi&pd_rd_wg=pOmgv&psc=1&refRID=7PW6EGCHF65V7YEA0EAE.

I’m sure you could find it cheaper elsewhere

And I didn’t care for the tackiness of the plant stickers since my tank is planted so I just scratched it off.

u/PixelVector · 11 pointsr/Aquariums

This is the first I've seen that people think live plants are absolutely vital for all fish like having a filter and heater.

OP made an aquarium for his niece than isn't a heaterless 1.5 gallon beta bowl with a gold fish in it. That's more than many parents/uncles/aunts can say. He could have done so. much. worse.

u/Because_Skyrim · 1 pointr/bettafish

I think I found a nice one.

It won't tell me the dimensions though, so I have no idea if it'll fit on my desk.

Looks to be like it's from the Penn-plax line.

I also wonder if the paint wasn't applied after purchase. I haven't seen a lot of tanks come with a painted backing like that.

Hell yes I wanna help!

String fairy lights.

A cool hanging lantern.

A corner shelf cause you can never find anything to put in the damn corner!

A little friend to keep you company.

Some snazzy rope lights (we have them in the bedroom. very cool).

Ceiling stars because screw you there awesome.

Don't act like you wouldn't want one.

And this so you can talk on the telephone while lying in bed.

I think I can help with this! Recently my Dwarf Gourami in a community tank developed a spot of fungus on one of his fins. I treated it with Jungle TB630W Tank Buddies Fungus Clear Tablets. It took about 3-4 days of treatment but the fungus went away immediately.

I was also concerned about my cycle and other inhabitants. I can tell you that my cycle never skipped a beat. I did remove the charcoal from the filter as directed. In the tank were Cories, Otos, Tetras, cherry shrimp, neritle snails and amano shrimp. No creatures showed any signs of stress and there were 0 deaths from the treatment.

I have a 20g tall tank, I took (2) tablets and mixed them into a quart of tank water. I poured probably 75% of that quart into the tank and left it alone for 4 days. I did not do the full treatment as I was worried about overdosing but I dont think there would have been any issue with adding the rest.

Do note, this stuff stains anything it touches. A spot of undissolved tablet touched a piece of cholla wood and now there's a small blue stain. Just make sure its fully disolved before adding it to the tank.

The water did turn blue blue initially, then faded out after a few days, returning to normal color after at 25% water change on day 4.

I hope this helps! It was very stressful experience since I've never had to deal with fungus before but everyone came out happy and healthy.

Here is the tank 1 day after the 25% water change.

You don’t need a kit. Just the tank. I checked amazon.ca and found one for 44 CAD

10 gallon tank

Or a kit for 60 which I’m kinda jealous of. I love rimless.
I’d be jealous

So there are some options. But id go to an LFS and look to see if they sell just the tank portion. Or petco. Petco has Aqueon glass tanks pretty cheap.

Your goal would be to move your filter and stuff to the bigger tank.

I guess the API test strips I bought don't do Ammonia, just Nitrite and Nitrate. I'm going to go out and get a test to see the ammonia level tomorrow, I'll post something when I see it. The tank right now is very cloudy, you can hardly see thru it. I guess for now we will plan to let the tank cycle for a few weeks and try again after getting some new readings. I guess when I was younger I was just lucky, I never bothered with tank setup or chemicals or acclimation, i just bought tetras and Balas and put them in my 5 and 10 gallon tanks and did 100% tap water changes every month. I cant ever remember loosing fish like this. I'm starting to think 3 gallons is just too unstable of a size. Less water makes for a more delicate balance. At this point I cant return the tank, besides a Beta is there any other suggestions on what kind of fish we could get? My 3yo son really only cares that it is blue.

Here is the tank
http://www.amazon.com/Tetra-29005-GloFish-Aquarium-Gallon/dp/B00591C0KI

In all the pics it shows multiple fish in there and in the store they pack those guys so tight into 10-15 gallon tanks. I really didn't think 4 were too many from the research I did. I was reading ~1 gallon per fish. I hate that this has happened and don't want a repeat

Thanks for all the replys.

From what I see on this photo of the bottom of the hood, nothing. They could barely survive, but this is all. It's for being able to see the fish, IMO.

This low cost bulb will allow to keep practically all not particularly demanding corals, but you will need to get a gooseneck holder for it (or use in desktop lamp with removable shade) and remove the current tank hood.

12W version of this lamp allows grow even sps in 1-3 gal pico tanks, see Reef Vase.

Be careful with NPS, they need a lot of feeding and cleaning water after this, this is much more expensive than keeping sps.

u/girlthatsasquirrel · 1 pointr/bettafish

You can buy it from Amazon, here’s the link!

u/colormypotato · 13 pointsr/crafts

Amazon sells that exact dome bowl thingy. I couldn't really find any alternatives that looked similar that weren't going to cost you an arm and a leg.

For the water (I imagine you'd have to put in some sort of divider, unless you want to just fill the whole thing up) you could use the technique this guy uses Youtube tutorial

u/Frillshark · 1 pointr/bettafish

It's a sponge filter, built in with the tank (it's this tank, btw)

I did a water change just yesterday, too - Would that change the results? (and should I do one again so soon, even if it might stress out my fish and make him sicker?)

u/acciocorinne · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

Gah I can't pick just one! I have so many cool things on my wishlist, so I'll give you a couple of options for coolest things :P How about an ice tray that makes Death Star shaped ice? Or a fish bowl you can mount on the wall? Or a hedgehog shaped cheese grater? All of these things are under $15!

Our 2yo(almost 3) was having similar issues between 6-10 months ago. It could be a many things. A few things come to mind like night terrors, thirsty or dry mouth (since i read your from Phoenix like me our weather can parch a kids mouth so bad they will wake up thirsty), or maybe even an ear infection or other sickness you may not be noticing. If she has had ear infections in the past then you might want to get her some tubes put in for her.

We found out it was a combination things but mainly she just wanted interaction of some sort. Solved this by getting a mini-artificial aquarium lamp thing. They have a little button where they can turn it on, play soothing sleepy music or ocean sounds and it moves like a little mini ocean. Automatically turns off after 20 minutes or so too. Kind of going off of what /u/BlueberryFish was talking about.

Also semi-related, but no more ipad play time ever, seriously those things are horrible and contribute to restlessness and waking sleep cycles. We stopped letting her use digital pads/phones all together and she sleeps much better.
Article on ipad use for kids with excerpt below.
>The simplest answer would be that many authorities do not recommend electronic devices for children below the age of three, and advise parents to restrict use after that. But when it comes to the actual medical risks, many authorities are highly sceptical about how much of a problem iPads and similar devices present in reality
