I have 16 months old twins. They are usually pretty well behaved when we go out to dinner. I don't let them run around or anything, but they tend to be messy. Being a former server I know that sense of dread when you see the family comes in with two toddlers.

I do a few things to help lessen the toddler impact: I bring some crackers with me so they don't freak out waiting for food. I'll play peekaboo or some other toddler friendly game to keep their mind off of being strapped to a high chair with nothing better to do. I clean up after them. Being the toddlers they are they tend to drop food on the floor. I try my best to get as much of that up as I can without actually moving the table and chairs. I bring disposable placemats like these because if they are given a plate there is a good chance it will be broken by the end of our meal. Last, but not least, I tip well.

Yikes.

For a little while, we used one of these at restaurants: Travel Food Mat Non-Slip Silicone Placemat Reusable Easy Clean for Babies, which is nice because you control how clean a surface it is, it has a gutter to catch food, and the whole thing rolls up well to fit in your diaper bag.

Only really problem is when there’s a tablecloth, then the mat’s little suction cups are useless.

We plop her (10 months) in the restaurant high chair. We sometimes ask for a second one if the first one isn't quite right... they can often be missing a strap or belt clip. They're a little big, but we watch her carefully and she can sit up fully unassisted. We slap a baby disposable place mat on the table, and give her appropriate food. We try to clean up any big chunks of stuff she drops, but I mean -- it's a restaurant floor. Guarantee you that they've seen worse messes from drunk adults, than whatever your baby is doing. :) If it's a restaurant with tips and she's made a particular mess, I'd probably give an extra $5 as a "thank you."

These disposable table mats are good for letting them off the table and limiting the mess, haha!

No advice on the mess as we haven't started yet but I did buy these for our hardwood floors. Bonus, they're machine washable.

We used this when eating out and pulled her right up to the table. Closed leftovers and food mess inside, dishwasher safe too.
