In my opinion, the best resource for a first time author is this book

As an aside, I applaud your decision to go the agent/traditional publishing route. Best of luck. Hang in there.

u/[deleted] · 1 pointr/Scotland

I thoroughly recommend getting Scotland the Best if you're after good food and drink - the best guidebook I've ever seen.

u/simism66 · 7 pointsr/askphilosophy

Yes. J.P. Moreland published a book called Consciousness and the Existence of God where he makes this claim. Also, I read a paper by Robert Adams called Flavors, Colors, and God (reprinted here) a while back that made this claim.

However, outside of philosophy of religion, most people generally regard invoking God as a solution to a difficult philosophical problem as giving up on it rather than solving it.

It is the Linux Core Kernel Commentary.

Found it on the shelf in my schools lab and decided to give it some attention. Pretty interesting so far.

This series worked for me, but alas I already had some Spanish under my belt.

Once you get your feet wet, I recommend checking out how Brazilians learn English. There a a lot of very good channels.

Freelance Illustration takes a couple years to break into, but if she has the time to invest, it's totally possible to build a thriving career :D The same thing is true with freelance Design work.

I can recommend Flavell and Flavell: Dictionary of Idioms and their origins, as well as /r/linguistics.

I'll look up your examples in the book tomorrow morning if I find the time.

However, I can already tell that the explanation given for "raining cats and dogs" is that, after heavy rains, the sewage systems would fail and overflow, leaving dead animals (mostly rats, but also feral cats and dogs) in the streets, making it look like they came with the rain from the heavens.

This, with the idea of "yearly baths" makes me think the whole of the list is made-up internet drivel. Will confirm after checking each idiom in my reference book.

u/emkay99 · 3 pointsr/Genealogy

Have you checked out what NARA itself has to say about genealogical sources there? Also take a look at Guide to Genealogical Research in the National Archives, which you should find in most libraries of any size.

I even trained as an archivist, I've made probably a dozen visits to NARA over the last 40 years, and I'm still finding new relevant collections to explore. There are an amazing number of record types and materials there that you've never even heard of before, so don't assume you can it all in one visit.

u/Hanginon · 2 pointsr/camping

I spent four years as a field service supervisor, assembling antennas all over the US, my crew and I camped damn near everywhere and depended on this guide To answer the question of "Where are we going to sleep tonight"? Between the Guide and Staying on the work site, we slept well, all over the USA.

Buy one of these, start doing your research, keep at it, and settle in for the long game. Continue to write and improve. Repeat as long as possible.

u/h2f · 1 pointr/Advice

I've self published a number of books, I work with people who have, and I have family members that have, and I'll respectfully disagree but so be it. If you want to get it published you should check out this book

u/longtailwriting · 3 pointsr/freelanceWriters

You can go with this writing bible. A lot of professional writers use this as their main stop for finding work.
