|name|Starflyer 59|
|about artist|Starflyer 59 is a shoegaze band from Riverside, CA founded in 1993 by Jason Martin, brother of Ronnie Martin of Joy Electric. While Martin has written all of Starflyer 59's songs, the band has included a number of different musicians over the years, including Jeff Cloud, Richard Swift, Frank Lenz and Josh Dooley. Starflyer 59 was signed to Tooth & Nail Records, their original and current label, after Jason Martin gave a demo to Brandon Ebel when the two met at a music festival in 1993. Shortly afterwards, Ebel contacted Martin and offered him a record contract. ([more on last.fm](http://www.last.fm/music/Starflyer 59))|

These might be better "mormon-specific" ideas. If your friend is into more classic music, this rearrangement of Mormon hymns was really refreshing: https://deseretbook.com/p/variations-sacred-theme-vol-1-lex-de-azevedo-1924?variant_id=110258-mp3

If your friend is into more contemporary music, and likes more "indie" or pop music, I've really enjoyed this more modern re-interpretation of hymns: "The Lower Lights" - lds and gospel hymns with a indie sound (see here: https://www.amazon.com/Hymn-Revival-Vol-2/dp/B008JEJQ0E/ref=pd_sbs_15_img_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=08GG9MBG3S6FSAVXDA8D)

You've gotten some great and accurate answers here, but don't think that there is no new Christmas music being written. There just seems to be no new secular Christmas music being written, at least any that takes off.

However, there are many Christian songwriters who regularly put out new Christmas music, and many of them do well. The Getty's write at least one new Christmas carol every year. The rapper God's Servant wrote a relatively successful album a few years back.

The radio only plays what they know people want to hear and what they are paid to play, because their desire is to sell ad time. It's hard for small artists to get their new work out there in the mainstream.

Eire.

My favorite Irish group is Rend Collective. I got to see them in concert last month. It was awesome. They're new album, Art of Celebration just came out today! I'm super excited about it.

u/ronito · 3 pointsr/classicalguitar

I was, of course, being sarcastic.

I'm there with you. I think this is a bad decision that only succeeds in people patting themselves as they take the classical guitar to an ivory tower to fawn over.

It's stupid.

We're not the piano, or violin. Hell, we're not even the Cello. We don't have an immense repetoire written by hugely talented composers. Like I said earlier the classical guitar does not have the repetoire nor the following to be snobby about what they play or talk about.

Don't agree with me? Look at all the important guitarists out there. After recording the "staples" eventually they all went to non-traditional classical guitar music.

Look at LAGQ, they're essentially the perfect example of this. They did about 3 or 4 albums of classical music but then the rest of their stuff is non-traditional like this: http://www.amazon.com/Lagq-Los-Angeles-Guitar-Quartet/dp/B000EGDB9M/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1416282276&sr=8-11&keywords=lagq

Christopher Parkening did a few cds of church music

http://www.amazon.com/Sacred-Music-Guitar-Christopher-Parkening/dp/B00000EB0H/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1416282359&sr=8-3&keywords=Parkening+Sacred

Barrueco did the beatles:

Sharon Isbin, chair of the guitar department at Juliard which by rights should be all about the Ivory Tower has several recordings of non-traditional classical music

http://www.amazon.com/Sharon-Isbin-Friends-Guitar-Passions/dp/B005BK95LY/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1416282506&sr=8-3-fkmr1&keywords=Sharon+Isbin+duets

Even beloved John Williams would not be up for posting under these rules
http://www.amazon.com/John-Williams-Echoes-London/dp/B0000026EF/ref=sr_1_27?ie=UTF8&qid=1416282831&sr=8-27&keywords=John+williams+guitar

http://www.amazon.com/Plays-Movies-John-Williams/dp/B0000029W8/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1416282883&sr=8-14&keywords=John+williams+guitar

In essence nearly every important classical guitarist would come here and be told to go somewhere else. I guess this reddit knows more about classical guitar than these guys and girls.

One time around 4th grade my mother bought a Christian cd that had a lot of rock Christian song on it. One of them was an Underoath song. I listened to it a TON. I was never able to get on the internet because we lived in the middle of bum fuck egypt and had dial up. Shortly after that my family started watching a Christian rock music program that was on like every sat night. They had a lot of TDWP and Underoath so I just couldn't wait for sat night to stay up decently late and watch it. After watching that for a while there was an old Christian college in my town that had an Amphitheater. My family went to a free concert of what I am assuming to be locals. There was a pretty heavy band there. I loved them. My parents kept wanting to leave but I think I talked them into staying. Needless to say I fell in love <3

EDIT: I found the CD! http://www.amazon.com/2005-17-Christian-Rock-Hits/dp/B0007VF296/ref=pd_sim_m_6?ie=UTF8&refRID=08242T67DEZJ3CM8DF3R

My week is just beginning - Monday is my day off.

Here's something I'd love that's 1 penny under $11!

i love the show catdog !

On the Metal Gear Solid soundtrack there is a song that is hauntingly beautiful. I just stumbled upon it one day and it really kind of blew me away. It is called The Best is Yet to Come: Amazon

u/headlessII · 2 pointsr/guitars

I remember seeing these back in the early/mid- 90's, I think. The name was memorable because spelling America with a "K" has long been way to denote American fascism, something I don't think the Korean makers of this guitar knew. (I'm pretty sure it is Korean-made.)

Nothing valuable--just another Korean copy guitar of fair quality. If it plays well, then that's what matters. But if it were mine, I'd cover up that brand name.

EDIT:

I wonder if Tonio K's album title had anything to do with the guitar name:

https://www.amazon.com/Amerika-Tonio-K/dp/B000002015

Good album, but I prefer his "Life in the Food Chain". Harder to fit on a headstock, though.

u/donuts-not-the-yoyo · 2 pointsr/Bluegrass

Every track is on this. It's only $22 and would be the easiest option as singles were not just the format of the era, but Jimmy was a Bluegrass Boy off and on from late 1949, until departing for the final time in 1954. Jimmy's presence on Bill's sessions is sporadic at this time, being replaced by the likes of fellow GOATS Carter Stanley & Edd Mayfield, along with the two Owen Bradley mandated electric sessions. If you just want to find random tracks on youtube, or you decide to buy the linked set and want to see which singles Jimmy played on specifically, Ctrl + F "James Henry 'Jimmy' Martin" here to find all of Jimmy's sessions as a BGB.

The Everglow by mae

One of the best albums-as-a-whole I've ever had the pleasure to listen to. Over... and over... and over.

mae is a (m)ulti-sensory (a)esthetic (e)xperience. Non-generic American rock.

u/twofedoras · 1 pointr/Christianity

David Crowder's "All Creatures of My God and King"

Fernando Ortega is a good resource as well.

Jill Phillips Album Kingdom Come

Randall Goodgames hymnal

There is a whole movement of doing this called Indelible Grace

As an aside, you might be interested in Mercyland: Hymns for the Rest of Us

Or write your own. find a chord progression and flip through an old hymnal for songs you've never heard of and see if something jives.

One of my favorite songs on this CD - [Summertime] (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000002W5U/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3LTLX9NMXR1NI&coliid=I1ZR79ZNGRX64A).

Thanks for the contest, and Summertime and the livin' is easy

Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan, covered by various black gospel artists. Awesome album.

u/hajahe155 · 3 pointsr/bobdylan

This is the "new" Gonna Change My Way of Thinking. Dylan recorded a rewritten version for the 2003 album Gotta Serve Somebody: The Gospel Songs of Bob Dylan, along with Mavis Staples.

Lyrics are completely different from the original; you can compare the two here.
