Published in 1999 so may be a few years before your time. Right at the height of the internet bubble. Development shops adopted a heavy corporate image right after that time. Most of the developer stereotypes used to be true.

It's quite simple - a COM object is something that implements the IUnknown interface. Beyond that, it gets very complicated. A really good introduction is Dale Rogersons book, which you should be able to pick up cheap second-hand.
