I've built up a nice little jazz collection over the past few years and I really love slow, introspective piano stuff. Andrew Hill's Hommage is a great solo album, as is Mingus Plays Piano. Dave Brubeck's Jazz Impressions of Japan has a nice balance of fast/slow jazz and Thelonius by Himself is contemplative and cool. For a something a little different try Walt Dickerson's Impressions of a Patch of Blue or Sun Ra's The Night of the Purple Moon. Fun, funky stuff.

Something faster paced? Bitches Brew by Miles Davis or The Cry by Prince Lasha are two of my best purchases.

This looks like a good selection of Verve stuff. Plus there's a Volume 2, with more of the Bossa Nova records.

Some great earlier tunes were on Roost - of which there are a couple collections to choose from.

I love this 2cd set - some people see a clash between Stan & Chet, but it sounds great to me.

While it appears that lorises might make very good pets as they seem harmless and cute by many people, they are wild animals and not suitable to be kept as recreational livestock. The fact remains that they are only harmless once their teeth have been removed as they are capable of inflicting a toxic bite.

I always recommend this album as a fantastic place to start. Once again amazed at this subreddit for zero mention of Lester Young. How can you learn to play if you don't spend time with Prez? I don't get it.

FWIW, that’s not a real album. It appears to be a European grey market bootleg of the classic album, Chet. It’s pictured here on the right.

Great album, btw. Highly recommend.

I would use your picture to justify sending it back, so you can get the real version. It’s still available from OJC/Riverside. Read up on this thread for future jazz purchases.

Edit: Just checked Amazon. Here’s the one you want, and for $17.

Sketches of Spain. My dad had it and I never got into it when I was growing up, no matter how I tried. After being blown away by Kind of Blue I bought my own copy of Sketches (on CD - woo!), and...still couldn't quite get into it. Put the album aside and left it for years.
Then one day I pulled it out on a whim, and tossed it on. HOLY CRAP THIS IS A BRILLIANT ALBUM!!! I don't think I ever denied that fact, just couldn't get into it until that moment.

That is a good one. I'm also a big fan of A Flower is a Lovesome Thing and their self titled album.

And George van Eps isn't bad either.

The Brubeck Quartet's sax player (Paul Desmond) and another famous bari sax player of the time, Jerry Mulligan, did an album called Two of a Mind that's the same style of sax playing.
