I am no primer on reggae but if I had to choose five at this moment they would be "East of the River Nile"-Augustus Pablo, "Heart of the Congos"-The Congo's, "Hebron Gate"-Groundation, "True Democracy"-Steel Pulse, and only because you said I can skip Bob Marley your probably familiar with Peter Tosh too "Ras Mek Peace"-Midnite. If your not familiar with Tosh though as five I would put his "Equal Rights" album. Though if you are just looking to get into reggae more another thing you can do is pick up one of the Trojan Anthologies. They have multi-disc sets of different types of reggae, from dub to roots to real spiritual stuff. They are a good place to start, provide a bunch of diverse artists from the very well known to the more underground and give a nice little foot in the door into the world of reggae. Trojan Roots Set to help understand more what i am talking about. Hope this helps man and hope you dig the tunes!
I just spent all last week compiling about 24 hours worth of Christmas tunes! My favorite albums are:

Excuse the excess I just didnt wanna be presumptious and post one thing that was too pricey lol if it needs to be something smaller all the patches in my WL are almost sold out lol anyways thanks for the oppurtunity its a great idea.
His song, "Proud To Be Black", was a reggae dancehall one-hit-wonder. Anyone who listened to reggae in the late eighties/early nineties knows this track.
When I just listened to it from the link in /u/Jawnt's post I immediately recognized it and assumed Robbie probably was probably doing a cover of the real song. You can imagine my surprise when trying to google the original singer and it turning out to be him.
Even if you are only familiar with a little dancehall from back then you are bound to recognize a couple of the tracks on this compilation album of hits which includes "Proud To Be Black".
Arsenal supporters are shocked to find out our Robbie was singing back then but trust me, folks who listened to dancehall back then would be doubly shocked to find out he now hosts a football YouTube channel with over 120k followers and over 40 million views.
As a subscriber to his channel and a gunner I've been admiring what he does but now I have even more respect for the man.
I would probably recommend some kind of collection so you can figure out what parts of the genre you find most interesting. This is a good start.
When you find the style or kind of artist you like you can go on from there and dig deeper. Happy listening!
Now you've gone and made me post my favorite Christmas song. I hope you're happy now.
(And here's another classic from the same album... 'cause we can all appreciate Santa in a big-time Toyota, gallivanting all day.)

If you go to any decent record store (or online I suppose) they may have some Trojan records compilations. They cost about 13 -20 bucks and have about 50 songs on three CDs.

Are three I own and enjoy immensely. From there you can pick artists or styles you're into and find some stuff you really dig. I didn't get into reggae really until recently so I'm sure there are some people who might have better recs than this. Enjoy the journey.
"Fire on the Mountain Reggae Celebrates The Grateful Dead" is a pretty good one.

I also love the reggae album of dead songs. It's called "Fire on the Mountain" and can be found here...

Check out the CD In Full Bloom by Square One, specifically tracks 3 though 11.
Also Byron Lee & The Dragonaires have a Buch of great albums, Soca Butterfly and Soca Frenzy being my favorites.

I can vouch that it's a well-done release. Double gatefold is really nice. Her first album Arular (another 2xLP double gatefold) is also $13.98 on Amazon
For a good overview of 90s dancehall, I recommend this compilation. It's got a ton of pretty untouchable dancehall classics: 'Murder She Wrote', 'Sleng Teng', 'One Blood', 'Benz & The Bimma'.
yep. Tougher than tough: The story of Jamaican Music
This: http://www.amazon.com/Gumby-Various-Artists/dp/B0001FV2XS
You have to go full 2004.
anything on this album
Three discs of old-school reggae christmas!
These ones:
Fire on the Mountain - Vol. 1
Fire on the Mountain - Vol. 2
Reggae:
the entire compilation "Studio One Rockers". I can't think of any music that's easier to get into than this.
The Story of Jamaican Music.... it's a 4-disc set spanning 34 years, but over time I went from being indifferent to loving almost every song to death.
