Diderot's encyclopedic drawings are amazing - picked up a used diderot hardcover yesterday and have really been enjoying it. Something like this

He very accurately and beautifully details a wide range of enlightenment technologies and processes from the mold-making and casting of artillery cannons to fishing fleet formations to farm rotations, etc. It's like an operating manual for modern society.

I think that with time (I worked with him for over 2 years) it started to become something more than just Hunson. Presences evolve, you know, but for some months it was definitely him, a spirit of disorder with apparently endless powers. Last time we spoke, about 6 months ago, he was a XIX century indian dignitary with a big red turban.
I would like to build a serious evocation paradigm based on Adventure Time (some of the series writers has magickal knowledges I think, there are clues here and there) but I lack time, alas.
Anyway I am surrounded by weird servitors whose visual image I pick directly from Rabelais woodcuts (there are 120 of them, a very good source for inspiration).
I only found the french wiki (http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Les_Songes_drolatiques_de_Pantagruel) but you can buy the book on Amazon, it is very cheap (http://www.amazon.com/Curious-Fantastic-Creatures-Dover/dp/0486284638/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1395242155&sr=8-1&keywords=curious+fantastic+creatures).
The weirdes pantheon is the one you create by yourself I daresay.

This may be something you'd be interested in, as well as it's on my list. (I love used books!)

Anytime I've done this kind work, I try and cheat as much as I can. Duplicating, offsetting and transforming can save a ton work. Also, as a general rule, building stuff in halves or even quarter and then mirroring will save me a ton of time. I'll usually go back with the crystallize tool and/or the warp tool to produce an 'illustrated' look and hide any mirroring or duplication.

One thing I would disagree with, that most people will tell you do, is draw it and trace/livetrace it. I feel the tools within illustrator are robust enough to achieve desired results without having to go through the process of sketching/scanning/tracing.

If you are looking for some great reference of this kind of stuff, this is a great book.

cheers!

Many are documented on the Bioshock wikia (some of which I've uploaded myself), but scattered across many pages.

Google Reverse Image Search helps somewhat. It appears that a lot of these are public domain and available in compilation books.

Otherwise, it's instinct and trying to find the appropriate keywords. I'm surprised how much work went into disguising the snowman as a pig, but retaining most of the features.

Here's another one from Burial at Sea.

"Stand Above the Crowd at Fontaine's"

Modiano Cigarette Paper

Concept Art of the Farmer's Market from the CultofRapture

Have One Oranges

I also found the Rapture City Archives to be really helpful in presenting all the ads in one place so I didn't have to extract the files directly.

I suspect that some of the cartoony ones are taken from 50s clip art books, but I'm not certain.

Probably bought a couple of those Dover Clip Art books with CDs. Loads of Victorian illustrations and all royalty/copyright free.

Haeckel rocks, I've got that Art Forms in Nature. That guy was obviously OCD with his artwork.

It is Orbit Antique from the Dover Art Nouveau font collection

I own this book here, and it comes with CDs with all of the images on them. It looks like it has some similar stuff. The illustrations are mostly Victorian-esque illustrations. Pay no attention to the word Steampunk in the title.
