Additionally, Tetra bettamin is a poor quality food, as it is chock-full-o-fillers. Omega One betta buffet flakes (and their betta pellet versions) are also poor quality with lots of fillers, but even more concerning is they use 3 different preservatives, and 2 of the 3 preservatives are known to cause cancer (BHT & BHA).

NorthFin Betta Bits, Fluval/Nutrafin Bug Bites, and New Life Spectrum Betta are HIGH quality betta pellets with good ingredients and little or none of the bad filler crap or nasty preservatives.

Hikari Bloodworms are great as a treat/diet variety as they add vitamins to their bloodworms, and ZooMed Betta Dial-A-Treat is nice for a 3-in-1 treat wheel container.

I'd recommend getting at least two different brands of the pellets I linked below + some variety of treats like bloodworms, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and daphnia. Alternate them day by day, meal by meal or otherwise mix them up such that the betta isn't always eating only the same thing day in and day out for every single meal.

- ZooMed Betta Dial-A-Treat is a decent 3-in-1 treat wheel container which has 3 different treats for betta diet variety. https://www.amazon.com/Zoo-Med-Laboratories-AZMBP5-0-12-Ounce/dp/B003ZWCTZO/

Beware of overfeeding, which is equally bad for bettas as underfeeding (they are gluttons and would eat till they burst if given the chance) https://i.imgur.com/4RR2LZ9.jpg. (save this pic for reference, feed betta as much as makes his belly match between 1st and 2nd photo, then let him digest back down to a normal belly before feed again.)

As for plant foliage coverage in the tank, I aim to keep it at around 40-50% of the tank space, and often use the "armchair" layout by putting the taller plants at the back and sides of the tank (forms an "armchair" shaped plant layout) with more open space in the front and center of the tank which gives the betta plenty of plant jungle to hide in and also an area of open swimming space where the betta could be visible. Yes lots of marimo moss balls would be great (but you still need a good number of silk or live plants with leaves that reach up to the water surface for the betta to rest on, and to have a plant jungle for the betta to play and hide in). I'm not sure about Luffy brand marimos, they seem to get a lot more mixed reviews. The multi-packs I've bought of marimo moss balls in the past were by Aquatic Arts, also from Amazon and there's some 4000 reviews a majority of which are good (4 stars and up).

Here: https://www.amazon.com/Marimo-Moss-Ball-Variety-Pack/dp/B00I323A0E/

You could also get moss balls from https://buceplant.com/products/marimo-ball?variant=41283280077 (they cost a bit more but buceplant.com is a great online seller of live aquarium plants). They also offer plenty of other live plant options... easy ones that wouldn't need much special care would be Java Fern (just don't bury the bulb-like rhizome of their roots). They offer all kinds of java ferns... If you have a question about live plants, you can ask my reddit friend bettab00000. She's gotten all kinds of easy live plants now and is quite knowledgeable about them.

I got the Marineland 5 Gallon Portrait off of amazon, I love it. It's on sale right now for $41 and comes with everything you need except for a heater, thermometer (It *MIGHT* have come with a stick on the glass thermometer, I can't remember, but I don't think it did) and of course accessories like substrate/plants. I did have to remove the pump and turn the flow all the way down, as it comes cranked all the way up, and I made a baffle out of a water bottle to redirect the water flow a little so it doesn't blow him all over the tank. It's easy to play with the outflow and get it where you want it to be. It also has a little notch built in for your heater cord, which is nice, because there is not a lot of room to run cords thru where the covers are. The instructions say not to place the heater in the filter compartment, but I have read of many people doing it without issue, I haven't tried it because I'm scared lol, but it would definitely be more aesthetically pleasing that way. It is literally the perfect betta tank with a few modifications. I love the lid, everything fits nice and tight, no worrying about jumping out, or even snails escaping. If you have a cat that might be inclined to step on top of the lid... it's not going anywhere at all, so thats a big plus for some folks. The filter and pump is all tucked into a compartment in the back so you don't see any of it. Plenty of room to add more biological media. The light is adequate as well, very bright. I have seen videos of people modifying the filter set up, theres plenty of room in there to make modifications. Here is a video about the tank from Aquarium Co-Op on youtube. If i remember correctly he shows you the modifications he made to it. I really do love it, and my fish has been very happy in it!

If you decide to get plants... be careful buying them at the store. I spent way too much on plants at the store that weren't in the greatest condition (granted I was buying for a 40 gallon and a 10 gallon as well and you won't have to spend much to fill a 5 gallon), they were about the same price online, and arrived MUCH healthier than the ones in the store were. I ordered a low light bundle off of amazon and was pleased with it. I also find that by buying at the store, I have no idea what the hell I'm looking at/for because I am a noob. That is why I bought bundles of plants that someone else pre-picked to work in a low light tank lol. I have also shopped eBay, you can get buy 2 get 1 free on a lot of plants, and the sellers are incredibly helpful!! Here is a nano aquarium bundle on amazon, I don't think you could buy these in store for less than that price either! The description says " This is a live plant bundle for smaller/nano aquariums or betta tanks. The plants do not need any special fertilizers or CO2, just enough light from an aquarium lamp to thrive. All plants are smaller and none are taller than 6". The plants in this bundle includes a Rosette sword, Marimo Moss Ball, Cryptocoryne Parva, Lobelia Cardinalis, Micro-Swords, Anubias Nana. "

It is more expensive than gravel, but I would look into Fluval Stratum or the Seachem Black for your substrate if you do real plants. Someone with more experience please correct me if I am wrong on any of this!!

I hope that helped some, all just my opinion based on what I've experienced/learned thus far with my 5 gallon & plants. I am a noob to planted tanks, but I really wanted to get away from plastic plants since they can hurt fins. I am still learning, so I am sorry if I gave you any misinformation!

Hmm. Any specific terrariums you want an estimate on or the entire thing?
Edit: Nevermind. I'll just give you a rundown of what I bought. Don't be scared off by the price, just start small. I recommend the Super Mix Moss from Appalachian Emporium to start you off, some cheap pot soil at home depot, mesh for the filter, pebbles/driftwood from outside and glassware at a thriftshop or wherever. Though I think getting springtails might be a must to keep the habitat clean from mold and such. Overall, it should cost you no more than $30-40 depending on what you get. I just happened to go overboard these past two months :)

err I think Rams prefer soft, more acidic water but most Rams you find today are bred in captivity so as long as the water is clean and parameters consistent you should be OK. https://aquaticarts.com/products/german-gold-ram-dwarf-cichlid

Plants provide tremendous benefit to an aquarium and make things easier for you in the long run! Plants soak up excess nutrients and filter, provide shelter and keep your water clean.

My recommendation for easy, high growing and easy to care plants are:

I didn't, at first. Took two years for it to be a truly regular diet. To be fair my sad, tragic ignorance probably played a massive part in this. I can't imagine eating lettuce after over a decade of burgers would be appetizing.

I used binder clips to clip greens of different varieties to the sides of the aquarium. Replace daily or every other day based on freshness/consumption. There were periods of defiance and took so much patience on both of our parts. One of the things that made a huge difference was this stuff. I used duckweed once as a decoration and my filter ate it like a starving diabetic eating cake. It devoured it and paid the price. The duckweed was too small and frail and the filter couldn't handle it. So I bought frogbit, much larger, dealt way better as a decorative piece. BUT my turtle loved eating it. I feel like that provided a real segue to greens. Frogbit was way too expensive to really continue buying but holding out on pellets and constantly providing very fresh greens made for a great transition.

Your turtle can eat $3 lettuces 100% of the time with the occasional addition of pellets and other things. My musk LOVED blueberries by the way. So You might try one as a treat once a month or every other month.

Just be patient. Don't think of your turtle as a kid needing as much food as possible whenever it wants it. Give it a week or two of consistently fresh greens, maybe invest in some frogbit, but don't give up. Take pictures of the lettuce every day if it helps you log how much and whether or not your turtle is eating. Be sure to look at the bottom of the aquarium because the turtle may bite some off but just drop it with out actually eating.

Hi /u/mnvsls

I have some questions I wish you can answer me. So, I got a Dwarf hair grass seed from Amazon on 4/8/19 and did a dry start using Amazon Soil substrate and Pet smart black gravel on the bottom. I cover the lid and spray it once a day and left it in the shade with natural sun light. As of today, I saw 5 single grass leaf poking out of the soil and I was wondering, How long does it take for the grass to cover all the soil and when should I flood it? Also, do you know the cheapest way to put Coworker in my tank? Fish keeping can be expensive so I tried my best to save money while I enjoy the hobby. If you have any tip or suggestions feel free to let me know, I would be so happy.

Thank you in advance. ME: Hug.

u/MelloYelloMarshmello · 2 pointsr/Aquariums

oooh! I would definatly do some taller plants in the back.

With that lighting I bet you could get some nice red plants. Im trying to remember the name of the exact species, but I have a red plant that stays smaller (around 2-5 inches tall). If I find the species again I will tell you for sure! The only problem with the plant is its kind of hard to find, and when you do find it, it can be kind of pricy.

I would also sudgjest some of the following plants:
Carpeting:HC, Monte-Carlo, Dwarf baby tears, Dwarf hair grass, S reppens. With this set up I think you could accieve any of these plants to carpet on the front right. Its just your choice for what you are going for.

Mid ground plants: Some kind of red plant (maybe), Crypts, or maybe annubius, but I dont think annubias would look good with this scape in my opinion (maybe annubias nana petite) or Buce (can be pricy, but would add some nice dark colors (maybe even some reds))

Background: Red temple plant (may get too big), Full size hair grass (you would have to trim it often, but this could flow across the top which could look good) Maybe a amazon sword (Big leaves may throw off scale)
Thats it. I hope I give some ideas. Im not the best. But this may be a start.

Heres a great website: http://tropica.com/en/plants/ You dont have to buy from here, but they often provite plenty of great ideas for scapes. Including light requirements, CO2 requirments, propigation method, and size of each plant.

EDIT: I found the red plant that stays small: http://tropica.com/en/plants/plantdetails/Alternantherareineckii'Mini'(023CTC)/4439
as well as a place to buy it https://www.amazon.com/SubstrateSource-Alternanthera-reineckii-Aquarium-Plant/dp/B071YG8KR2/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1521117896&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=Alternantherareineckii

I ordered from "Aquarium plants discounts" (name of company or whatever) from Amazon. And Java Moss from "Aquatic arts". They're not the cheapest to be honest, a bit on the expensive side to me whos on a budget. But everything arrived alive and healthy, decent amount of stems or nice sizes for the root plants, after 1 month everything is still alive. I would personally order something like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078K5CMH8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_NV23Db9T2MPMW

Theres probably better sites for Canada that I don't know of but I'm just trying to offer one option, good luck (:

u/94332 · 1 pointr/Aquariums

Someone in your /r/fishtanks post recommended you get live plants. This is a good recommendation but you were right, plants can be harder to get right than fish, and it can add unwanted complications if you don't know what you're doing.

He recommended Java Ferns, which are hardy, low light tolerant plants, but depending on your water they will still not grow. We need to know more about your water to know what plants you can grow, but usually a safe and easy "beginner plant" is actually Java Moss. Java moss is tolerant of low light, low nutrients, and just about everything else. It's a good "filter plant" for your tank, and it will work with the light you have.

[Edit: alternatively, if you can come by "Duckweed" which is illegal to import in a lot of places, it's a miracle plant when it comes to filtering your tank water. It is messy and you'll have to clean it out of your tank every now and then, but it floats on the surface so it's pretty easy to manage in a small tank. It's illegal to import in some places because it grows so fast and is so hard to kill that it can take over ponds, streams, lakes, etc. so you need to be careful when you clean it out of your tank that you dispose of it safely. Don't flush it down the sink, toilet, or bath tub. It is not illegal to own, at least in the U.S. ]

I got it on amazon and honestly the description doesn’t say. Yes it’s seeds. It’s this one—> SunGrow Aquarium Temple Plant Seeds, 2 Ounce, Vibrant Green Tropical Hygrophila Plant for Freshwater Fish Tanks, Easy to Grow Carpet Plants for Aquarium, Ideal for Shrimp, Goldfish and Guppies https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074TR3VGB/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_enfCDbFQMKABW

u/Terminal_MTS · 2 pointsr/Aquariums

If you’re going to go with RCS, definitely add some real plants and mosses.

For starters, I highly reconmend this link. I’ve ordered them 3 times, and didn’t receive less then 7-8 moss balls either time. In one order, one of the moss balls grew to the size of a softball. https://i.imgur.com/ruBRGs3.jpg

You can actually pull them apart and attach the moss to rocks or driftwood using super glue, which i did due to running out of space for moss balls. https://i.imgur.com/rDTgJ6Y.jpg

Even if you decide to not get any real plants, this is a great addition to your tank and requires no extra work. Another super easy plant to grow that shrimp loves is hornwort.

u/Camallanus · 2 pointsr/bettafish

Marimo moss balls are extremely slow growing plants (really algae) and aren't going to do much in the way of absorbing nitrates ("keeping the water in good condition"). If you want a plant to keep the nitrates in the water low, then you need something that grows quickly like floating plants or stem plants. I like Salvinia minima for floating plants since they're difficult to kill (but not difficult to remove like duckweed). There are tons of stem plants, but the easiest one for me so far has been Hygrophila corymbosa.

Still, they're great at other things (grazing location for shrimp), and I like how they look, so I've bought these a couple times:

Hello I was going to sow it with seeds but user u/ricamac said the following :

“Allow me to chime in with u/xXJuanSanXx regarding the use of seeds. I decided I wanted to play with some I found on Amazon, so I purchased some of the ground cover and some of the hairgrass.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B074PMLW6N/ref=twister_B071WBWCBF?_encoding=UTF8&th=1

I made "bushes" by wetting and coating rough textured river rocks and pieces of driftwood with the ground cover seeds. I germinated them in in a covered container with misting until they looked like bushes, then placd them in aquariums.
"Bushes" made by coating river rock(s) with seed.
The plants eventually all detach and float away, but remain green even so. Not recommended unless you're always messing with your aquarium, in which case they make fine temporary bushes...

I decided that the "ground cover" seeds needed to be planted with substrate since they looked fine until they floated off the rocks & wood. I also wanted to try the hair grass seeds. So I used the seeds in a couple of dry start aquariums. The seeds only take maybe two weeks to germinate, so I waited until the other traditional plants had been given a month, then sprinkled the seeds where I wanted them. Added water 2 weeks later. The vertical "cactus" looking shapes are those dried Cholla wood aquarium decorations that I filled with houseplant potting soil and added seeds to.

Dry start seed growth right after water added.

Fluval Flex 15gal (13.2gal)

The smaller (3.5gal) has nothing but seeded plants, and the larger has some baby tears and Alternanthera reineckii "Mini" from culture.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071YG8KR2/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The hairgrass all melted after a couple of weeks, in both tanks. It looked great while it lasted...
I had over-seeded, and the ground cover just kept growing. Layer upon layer of plants, piling higher and higher, with entangled roots keeping it together as if a single plant. All my smaller shrimp decided to spend their lives in the underbrush, never to see the light of day, or the appreciateion of observers, again. So sad. But I know they're doing fine because, every once in a while, one of them allows himself to be seen, just to mock me.”

Therefore I probably just have to buy plants at a shop.

u/hurts50good · 9 pointsr/plants

The tall plants were just from an unlabeled pack of bulbs from my local fish store. I think they were labeled “betta bulbs” or something to that effect. Sorry! I hope someone on here knows what they are.

I had trouble finding the supplies I needed from my local pet stores (especially for cheap), and ended up getting some things off Amazon.

An adjustable heater, for up to 10 gallons: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07KKLHJ2Y/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_0sO7CbVTA1R52

Aquarium rocks/substrate for a planted, healthier aquarium:

Cheapest supply of aquarium plants I've found--oh no, my favorite store, Aquatic Discounts, is on a hiatus! Well, here's something similar:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B078K5CMH8/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_EAO7Cb52MC3ZF

Rinse before planting, and watch carefully and remove dying leaves/sections in the first few weeks, but they really are a great value for the volume you'll get.

I am quite happy with the following (I use on a 10 gallon and a 3 gallon at the same time using a T-fitting and two diffusers and two indicators):

Diffuser @$16.99 ea https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01LXFUGE5/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

This diffuser is good for hanging on the side of your tank. There are many others to choose from.

7 day timer @$14.65 (Three prong plug for regulator solenoid): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006LYHEHG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
You DO NOT want to let it run overnight because they say it will suffocate your fish.

CO2 indicator @#17.89 (need one for each tank) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00Z9KWTHS/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

CO2 proof tubing @#9.99 (regular tubing may leak CO2!) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008UCOFJW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Regulator with bubble counter and solenoid @$69.99 (Yes, this one works great at that price) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N42JPDV/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Adaptor fitting to get regulator attached to a paintball tank @$9.90 (I had to modify this part, so pay attention): https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00I2UMZ2Q/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Paintball tank @$21.49 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007XKFQCM/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Dicks Sporting Goods will refill for $5 using your tank.

The issue with the adaptor is that the one I got had a bleed-off relief hole too far down in the threads such that the hole was exposed even when the tank was fully screwed in because the thread depth on the tank was shallow (fewer turns total) compared to the adaptor, Had to plug and re-drill the hole.

You should at least look at these components as part of your evaluation.

Before you get duckweed, know that some call it aquarium herpes for good reason. It's pretty hard to completely remove if you decide you don't want it, and it will stick to anything coming into and out of the tank.

I'd start with a different floating plant like salvinia minima, red root floater, frogbit, or mosaic plant first to see if you like floating plants. You can order any of those off Amazon, though you will pay a little more than at a LFS. I got these spangles a month ago and they'll take over the surface of the tank if I don't clean half of them out every week or so.

Hey I was actually looking at SubtrateSource! They have a lot of variety and I'm in the same boat as you (the only plant they sell near me is bamboo).

I noticed this "variety pack" http://www.amazon.com/Live-Aquarium-Plants-Different-Kinds/dp/B00R5HJ3U4/ref=pd_sim_sbs_petsupplies_1?ie=UTF8&refRID=0A7Y6GKVTH10PTED24AY but with only 2 reviews I wasn't sure how valid they could be.

Thanks for the response; just wanted some feedback from actual buyers.

Also, what's the appeal to the moss ball? Is it just a ball of moss that rolls around? Haha

u/Str8T4nkin · 1 pointr/PlantedTank

Yeah the Marino balls I have are like weird textured. Idk if they are fake I got them from here. www.amazon.com/dp/B00I323A0E?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

They brake apart so easily and are just kind of not the same texture I got from a pet store. Was looking for not really a carpet type plent but maybe something the cherries can swim through feel like that would make them happy.

I bought this java fern last november (apparently), and it arrived looking sad, papery, and mildly dehydrated. Well, I put that thing in water, and it's still going strong. It's even got a baby java fern growing off one of its leaves in the last week or so.

Driftwood is harder to buy on Amazon, because you only order a size. You can't see pictures of the particular item you're buying. Sometimes you'll get something gorgeous, sometimes you get a "chunk of wood."

u/mollymalone222 · 1 pointr/aquarium

Yes, it's a shame they don't always say if a plant was grown emersed or submerged or even if it is truly aquatic or just marginal. I think those are 4 basic words important to know for aquarium plants. The one PetSmart got me on in the beginning was Mondo Grass... lesson to the wise, pull out your smart phone...

I hesitated to order plants at Amazon, but got some Buce and it was very healthy https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01JEE2TRO/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I ordered this set of beginner plants from Amazon and I love them.

I also ordered these on 2/28/19 from Amazon and the 6 trimmings have grown to cover both my tanks.

It should feel like moss underwater, as opposed to hair. You can also pull off small chunks really easy. They're really hardy plants, so I would worry about how they were shipped.

edit: I'd also returm them on the grounds of improper size/count and get these, these are what I bought. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I323A0E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_05CAxbPR2F9ZA

Mine came with some grains of sand on them which I just brushed off.

I bought mine on Amazon as tissue culture plants, they come as very small plantlets a plastic cup growing in a gel. All you do is rinse off the gel, pick apart the starts and plant them. They grow super fast and as the are grown in a lab they are pest free(no snails!). S.repens, Bronze crypt

Dwarf water lily bulb I got off Amazon for like 13. This is two weeks of growth.

u/Dick_Giggles · 2 pointsr/Aquariums

Yes, the small ones in the VERY front that are barely there lol, are monte carlo, I'm hoping they will come back and carpet... I basically destroyed them adding the rock and didn't give them enough time to recover after planting.

The ones in front of the rock are S Repens.

The back left / front right are Hornwort Bunch Plants

The tall ones in front of the heater are jungle Vallisneria

The best way to know if you have enough or to much co2 is by getting a CO2 (PH) indicator.

Thank you! The fern comes attached to a piece of coconut shell. I picked it up from amazon.

Water spangles, or salvinia minima. I got them on Amazon, and they came in surprisingly good condition.

It's kind of hit or miss for some people, but it's a good deal. Mine were all big and green.

anubias on driftwood i was actually thinking of adding this but I don’t know if it would fit!

I bought mine off amazon: Mainam Nymphaea Rubra Bulb Dwarf... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0752V9KR7?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

My bulb sprouted within 2 days and after 2ish months, it now has 15-20 pads on the surface lol

u/N3ONV3GAS · 1 pointr/Aquariums

I actually ordered them off of Amazon like that. The plant is already attached to the wood when it arrives.

Not at all! https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00R5HJ3U4/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_KmJ7wbAE8RKRJ

I hope we're allowed to comment links here, I've been a lurker for a while. I definitely got way more than 15 (I think because they felt bad about delayed shipping due to those bad storms going on), I'm not sure if that's a common thing or not. You literally can't beat the price. Some people rated and said they came with snails so I made up a bucket of water with had a snail before I even got them and soaked them for a few hours before I put them in my tank and I didn't see any snail or eggs to begin with. I'm happy with them!

u/Rodger_Rodger · 3 pointsr/bettafish

This is the one I got. It came with more than advertised: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I323A0E/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ZR10Cb8R5X20C

I believe it's extremely similar to baby tears if i'm correct here's the link: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B074TR3VGB?psc=1&ref=yo_pop_mb_yo_pop_mb_pd_t2 -though for these you absolutely have to do a dry start or they will just rot.

I bought these marimo moss balls off Amazon in 2018. They were in great shape, condition (it was cold weather when I purchased them), no snails or pests.

They are a bit more expensive now but mine came with more than 6 in a plastic tub with a little bit of water. Some of them were huge. No problems with them at all until I tried to accidentally kill them with hydrogen peroxide by leaving them in the tank during a spot treatment.
