The old ones worked for what we need them for. Here's the pack I bought a few years ago. I keep the extras as spares. There's smaller packs (singles and doubles) but this was the best deal.

Here's a 2 pack that is Prime if you're a member for less than $10. Better deal than when I bought...
I've not run into any limitation with them. The two TV's I have that use external AV receivers are the ones we use them on. It was annoying having to use a separate remote to only turn the power on and off on the receiver. With these I only need one remote out. Easier to train the Mother-in-Law too every month when she visits (and for some reason needs re-trained every time she visits....) with only one remote.
I have no issues programming the remotes either. Can also do it manually (the new ones require the use of the on screen UI I believe). I just programmed a new AV (2018 model) in the bedroom. The code wasn't available in the onscreen UI programmer but I was able to locate it online and input it manually.
