yea, matttress without boxspring might have a tendency to sag in places that are unsupported [depending on mattress construction], plywood is one option but might run the same risk of accumulating moisture, another avenue might be to get some plywood and cut into strips to use as slats (and if that is not sturdy enough you could afix additional feet to those supporting slats
