I own a Canon A-1 and the battery that came with it has since depleted and I am no longer able to use the camera. I did a little research and noticed the Canon A-1 takes one 6V PX28A battery. Which I have found here. I have also heard that this battery has a few equivalents, most notably the 4LR44 which I have found here for a cheaper price with more batteries.


According to this manual for the Canon A-1, it says that I should be using batteries that have silver oxide or alkaline manganese. Of the both batteries I have listed both are Alkaline batteries but one is a PX28A and the other is a 4LR44.

So my questions are:

  • Does it matter whether I use a PX28A or a 4LR44 battery? Will using either or have their own respective pros and cons?
  • Why do certain cameras require specific types of batteries such as silver oxide or alkaline manganese?
  • And are either of the batteries I listed acceptable as a replacement battery for my Canon A-1?
