My now-wife has always had a fixation on Minneapolis ever since she toured a college there (she picked a different one thankfully, else we'd never have met). So for her birthday, I prepared a trip to the twin cities. She knew she was flying somewhere, I gave her general instructions on types of clothes to pack, but everything else was a surprise.

In preparation for the trip, I ordered a restaurant menu holder similar to this and prepared a fake restaurant menu for the trip. I picked her up for work to drive to the airport and told her, "Oh, by the way, I was looking at places to eat here and had one of them send me their menu," and then handed her the menu itself. She was very weirded out but opened it and within a few seconds it clicked and she was super delighted. She even teared up a bit at the length I went to for her birthday.

Prior to the trip, we had picked out her ring (she chose the band and stone, they told me when it came in but not her), so I had the ring with me on the trip and she didn't know yet but given the circumstances, I was pretty sure she was going to say yes. When we got to the airport, our flight unfortunately was delayed a bit and we didn't end up getting into Minneapolis until like 10:30pm. We got to the hotel and got checked in. She went to wash her face and when she came back out, I hit a knee and said "I don't want to wait another minute without you as my future wife. Will you marry me?" right there in the Courtyard Marriott.

She was so stunned her response was, ".....okay." Big smooch, ring on finger, etc etc etc. She says she wouldn't have had it any other way. She's very, very much a no-grand-gestures-in-public so this was the perfect way to get the proposal out of the way and get on to being engaged.

For our wedding, she was going to answer the "Do you?" question with "Okay" as our inside joke, but she was so caught up in the moment she forgot.
