It's worth it for me. I grew up with a narcissistic father and have probably had CPTSD for the past 40+ years.

I didn't discover just how much I had lived in a state of constant emotional dissociation and pervasive anxiety+fear until I started therapy this year. So improving vagal tone and getting my autonomous system to be in a state of safety is very important to me - it's one of my primary goals at this point in my recovery. Having this constant feedback (I don't really care about saving the data or keeping records, I mostly want to use the HRV data on my phone's screen to gauge the current state of my vagus nerve) is very useful for me, and helps me to know what's "working" - whether its deeper breathing, or EFT tapping, or when I do EMDR on myself, or meditation, etc. I can check to see if I'm anxious or not at ease and unaware of it just by checking the HRV numbers. And then I can take action. The Sweetbeat app is under $10 and the Polar H10 heartstrap is around $60 I think, so for me it has definitely been worth it.

For example last night, I came home, sat down to read (this awesome book - https://www.amazon.com/Accessing-Healing-Power-Vagus-Nerve-ebook/dp/B013ZNI4JC) and noted that my HRV numbers were really really low, in the 30s. So i spent a few minutes doing some slow breathing, got the numbers up into the 60s and kept monitoring them while I read my book and focused on my breathing. That's the kind of thing I do throughout the day.

You might find it helpful to read more about polyvagal theory and the social engagement system - basically when our nervous systems are dysregulated, it makes it very difficult for us to connect with people and fully engage socially. This book goes into more detail about how to address this: Accessing the Healing Power of the Vagus Nerve: Self-Help Exercises for Anxiety, Depression, Trauma, and Autism

I've also read these general books about friendship and found them helpful. They are aimed at women but could really apply to anyone regardless of gender:
