Don't buy a system that has the FX series CPUs. Too old to do what you want.

This Acer Aspire TC + GTX 1050 would be better. You'll have to add the graphics card yourself but it is very easy. This guy has a video about how to upgrade that particular system. He is showing the newer 7th gen i5 system but the 6th gen one isn't that much slower and costs less so you can afford a GPU. You can also get an RX 460 which costs a little less than the GTX 1050 and almost the same performance.

I wouldn't recommend something with a GT 730 graphics card in it, you'd probably be better off getting something without a card and adding a ~ $100 or so card to it such as a GTX 1050 or RX 460

Something like this Acer, select the 7th gen 7400 for $10 more and then add a card to it. I can understand how some people could feel intimidated building a PC but adding in a card is really simple.

The build zealots are absolutely wrong when it comes to budget setups.

Just buy this ($400) and insert this ($140). You're done.

Building starts making sense at $800 or so, and becomes hugely superior above that.

If she is just using it for browsing the internet, some streaming, and maybe light MS Suite usage you may not need to go to $800 the Acer Aspire TC, Intel Core i5-6400, 8GB DDR4, 2TB HDD, Windows 10 Home can do well for an older family and its for $400, you can bundle with a monitor and get everything for less than $500

This is tough - right now, I would just give you something that has 8GB of memory and a 6400 or a 6100, but since you mentioned video editing, I would have to ask you, how intensive is it? Will it be some light editing on occasion? How important are render speeds to you? Are you willing to wait 15-20 minutes for a HD 5 minute video clip to render? You won't be doing any 4K shit on this, but integrated graphics will hold up 1080p just fine. I would recommend this desktop by Acer.

I'm looking to build a middle of the road system that is a step above current gaming systems. I am not a graphics nut but want to do modern games at 1080 and have at least five years before I need to upgrade anything. I would like to run dual monitors, one for games and the other for podcasts/youtube while I play.

Games I enjoy are strategy/roguelikes - so the most demanding games will probably be starcraft and civ 6
I am looking at different builds towards the low end and it seems I won't save anything - in fact it will cost more - if I build.

My current plan is to buy this tower from Amazon with an i5 and add a gtx 1050 TI putting me in the ballpark of 550-600 when all is said and done.

Looking to build a similar system with an i3 on my own would run 600-650 after the OS, the only downgrades I see are the power supply. Am I missing something? I've built plenty of PC's in the past so putting it together on my own doesn't hold value - I just want the best bang for my buck.

Sell the HDD and replace it with an SSD. You have a perfect everyday PC.

If you are talking about this one on Amazon, then no. It may be $137 cheaper than the one you have the part list for, but if you upgrade the the Aspire TC with a PSU and 1050ti, it will end up costing more. Also note, the Aspire TC has integrate Intel HD graphics which is not as powerful as a 1050ti.

This would be better in every way. The problem is that it still doesn't come with a graphics card, so you'd be stuck with integrated graphics at first. Just keep an eye out for sales and drop in an RX460, 1050Ti, or RX470 later.

It's not really hard if you are handy. I followed a you tube build based on the case I used, a cooler master elite 130. People on r/buildapc are very helpful. Another great choice is buying a decent computer and upgrading. There is an i5 acer act 780 refurbished for 370 on newegg.com or brand new for 400 on amazon.com that can take a smaller gtx 1050 ti.

Just make sure to unplug the PC and touch the power supply to ground yourself to the PC before touching any internals.

Not sure if this goes here or not. I'm looking for a new pc for mostly home office with some streaming and browsing and potentially light gaming (older stuff mostly, nothing heavy).

Each time I try to go through PCPartPicker to build something comparable to this, I end up with the build costing way more. What am I missing? Especially since the amazon build comes with Windows.

MSRP doesn't reflect what you really pay because bundles (generally board, CPU, and memory) can greatly discount the components and so do sales.

The 6500 is also around $200, providing a midpoint between the low-end 6400 ($180) and high-end 6600 ($220 or $240 depending on if you get the k-class)


I just personally went with the 6600k because I got a good deal ($400 for board, chip, and 16GB of DDR4) and figured I'd go all out if I was going with an i5.
