I used an iPad for a while with Sketchbook Pro, it worked okay, except it got slow as molasses after more than 3 layers. (I have the new one)

I use the cheaper one of these, it's one of the more precise kind of styluses you can get

I also have iDraw, but it's a vector drawing program more like Illustrator, I don't use it much.

The graphics tablet is definitely worth it if you can see yourself doing a lot of art in the future.
