AoE2's campaigns were fantastic, enjoyable, and historically accurate. AoE3's campaign was a joke.

AoE3's online system was plagued by bugs and a poor ranking/matchmaking setup. The Zone was AWESOME when it was still up.

AoE2 had more civs than you could shake a stick at and the units were fun and interesting and varied. AoE3's units were all basically rock-paper-scissors in terms of variety.

AoE2 was just a better game.

EDIT: As for a digital copy of 2, you're probably not going to find one. However you can pick up the "Age of Empires Collectors Edition" (AoE1&2 + expansions) for about $10 on Amazon.

As someone who is just now dipping his toes into the RTS, I understand your want for good and easy RTS games. Many RTS gamers I have conversed with over the years have recommended Company of Heroes. It is an RTS set in WWII. Personally, I enjoy the Age of Empires series. I suggest you pick up the Age of Empires Collector's Edition, which includes Age of Empires I and II plus their respective expansions. You should be able to snatch a copy at your local Wal-Mart or you can order it from Amazon. Then just play a custom game with a couple of CPU opponents on the easiest setting, until you become proficient.

I bought the Ubisoft AOE Collector's Edition 2 days before they announced the HD remake.

Ignoring multiplayer, does the HD remake offer anything significant that Forgotten Empires doesn't?

Optical discs are a digital medium. Do you mean only downloading stuff?

If that's the case, no. You can still get sales on DVD/CD versions of apps and games, for one. Last May, I bought a physical copy of Metro 2033 for $7.00. No one on the downloadable side would beat that price until nearly September.

And there's stuff like this Age of Empires collection that you won't find at a download store at all.

I ordered this when I couldn't find my old copy and I also hate steam.

AOE2 and Conquers seemed to install well. I ran in compatibility mode and I did the legacy programs switch and when I run the program nothing happens...

Age of Empires: Collector's Edition with the first AoE and expansion and AoE: AoK + expansion. $10.

On sale, it's easier to recommend but it has more bugs than the original. Just don't get it at full price, ever. Get this instead if you can't decide:
