Absolutely agree there. I've only done that with a laptop connected to a TV, sitting on some sort of cooling pad

If you want to get the best performance you can, I would recommend getting a laptop cooling pad. When a computer had to do a lot of work it generates heat, in order to protect it self from overheating your computer will purposely slow it's self down. Getting a laptop cooling pad will help with heat generation and is the cheapest and easily thing you can do to get a performance boost from your laptop.

As I said above, like many powerful routers this one runs hot. Get a cheap USB-powered laptop cooling pad (even this cheapo is prob okay - https://smile.amazon.com/AICHESON-Cooling-Lightweight-Portable-Notebook/dp/B01KZALHGK/ref=sr_1_19?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1540818198&sr=1-19&keywords=laptop+cooler) - pick one on noise level if it's going to be in an occupied room (mine is in a hallway, away from bedrooms).
I have a 15 year old cooling pad that I got from some random place plugged into the USB port on the router and it keeps the CPU temp down in the 40's (C) - uncooled the router will spike into the 80's. Cooled, the router will last much longer.
