Your amp has a headphone jack. Get yourself some decent headphones and play through them. I recently got these AKG K44 and they sound pretty damn good for $60.

Headphones

This book that will freak my parents out.

C'mon...gimme

You guys look so nice today. I mean I've seen some good looking folks in my day but damn.

Heyo

So you may or may not be looking for advice on headphones but just wanted to throw this out there.

If you're after a pair of cans that sound good but are also decently priced I'd probably go with these:

When I'm not playing games I do a lot of home recording and quite happily use them for both recording and gaming. Great sound without getting into crazy price territory.

Peace!

First, it's a headphone output, not input.

Second, headphone cables are usually (but not always) smaller than most guitar cables.

Third, the headphone output will be set to a level that the amp can't blow a normal set of headphones. That's why it's a dedicated headphone out, rather than line out (which would be line level).

In short, All you should need is a 1/4" male to 3.5mm female cable. I can't see that anyone makes one, so this and this will achieve the same result.

From your description, RS sold you the correct stuff. If it's crackly, some switch cleaner on the cable going into the amp may help (amp should be OFF), or there's a contact issue in the amp, or somewhere along the line.

Two small bits of advice for you, though;

  • If the "idiots" at RS got as good a description as we did here from a self-confessed rookie, I wouldn't be surprised if the wrong items were purchased. I'd suggest you make sure there are no issues before you blame them.

  • Please, get some better headphones. Beats are way too bass-heavy for guitar audio. And they're pretty low quality. You could do much worse that some half-decent "studio headphones", like these.

For closed-backs to prevent sound leakage, maybe the AKG K44 or the Sennheiser HD201.

Unfortunately both come with longish cables, but you can braid them if you want which is really easy.

Yeah monitors are a big plus for working low end. Even in rooms with poor acoustic treatment. I use KRK Rokit 5s
When I can't use my speakers late at night, i'll use these headphones. I personally love these things and bought them twice after I accidentally broke my first pair. They do a good job and i mixed a few albums with em that people where happy with.

Actually it looks really like this 'cept for the cover of the phones, mine has a smooth surface with a strip of grey dotted metal in ze middle:

The AKG K44s are quite cheap and provide very clear sound compared to the more expensive Turtle Beach X12s, Vengeance 1300s, LX-3000s and Asus Orion Pros I've used in the past. The only downside is that comfort wasn't a top priority, but I've never found them any more uncomfortable after long sessions than any other gaming oriented headset I've used.

Suggestions for big heads?

The ideal headphones for me are:

  • Over-ear
  • Closed back
  • Detachable wire
  • Above all, COMFORTABLE ON A LARGE HEAD.

I don't care too much about sound, but comfort is paramount. The only headphones I've ever tried that fitted on my head were the AKG K44, and they're perfect for me in every way, except that they don't have a detachable cable and so I keep breaking them.

I've looked at the AKG K 240 and they're semi-open. not ideal for me, but if I destroy my K44's cable in the next six months that's where I'll go.

The alternative would be getting a Bluetooth headset, but every time I've tried them it sounded like someone was taking a shit in A minor.

Budget - £30
Source - PC onboard sound, Galaxy S4
Isolation - Would be nice if possible
Type - Full sized
Tone - Balanced but good bass
Past headphones - Sony MDR-V150, Sennheiser CX 175
Preferred music - indie rock, rock

Basically narrowed it down to these 2 which seem good value at the moment: Sennheiser HD419 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-Closed-Back-Over-Ear-Headphones-Dynamic-Black/dp/B005N8W1MO

or

AKG K44 http://www.amazon.co.uk/AKG-K44-Closed-Back-Headphones/dp/B001K3ENEA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1407535305&sr=1-1&keywords=akg+k44

The only thing thats putting me off the K44s is they seem to stick out from your head quite a bit and I have a big head as it is so want something more flush to my head. Any other suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!
