Porcelain is good. It's generally lighter than ceramic and much less likely to chip, but much cheaper than bone china.

Ikea always has a nice white set, but they also often have a patterned set or two in porcelain. World Market is similar. If all you're looking for is a little bit of color around the rim, there's these: www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-16-Piece-Stripe-Dinnerware-Service/dp/B00Q5X29R8

For "not quite paper plates", look into disposable china.

Personally, if I were planning to do this for the next several years, I would invest in some simple dinnerware sets.

You could mix and match a couple, too to avoid an entirely plain white table. It'll be cheaper to buy sets rather than plate by plate. Consider the coffee mugs for after dinner or in case of brunch.

Also, look into IKEA for simple, super affordable sets.

Dinnerware that combines a simple, rustic design with a soft ruffled edge. It allows you to coordinate ARV with other porcelain to get different characters in your table settings.
