Not sure where you live, but if you're in the US, you can buy some cheap basketball shoes off Amazon. Nike Stutter Step 2 make for a good first pair, a cheaper alternative would be shoes by And1. And1's were the first shoe I ever used, and they did really well for what i needed (and were inexpensive). They wear out pretty quickly outdoor but if you're always inside you'll be fine.

I'd recommend a training program if you're able to spare the cash, since they will be a more "focused" setup for you. But you'll ONLY get out of it what you put into the program, so if you're not sure that you'll be extremely committed, I'd say save your money.

Two generic training program that will help you, though, in case you can't drop the dough:

for PG training do (at least) 3 times a week:

  • 5 makes (1 handed form shots) @ each r & l baseline, front of rim
  • 5 makes @ each hash AND corner of the key
  • 10 freethrows (takes not makes)
  • 5 makes each: Mikan Drill / Reverse Mikan / layup / cross layup / hooks in the paint / bank shot in the paint
  • 5 makes (each hand) sprints with finish at the rim 10 freethrows (takes not makes) 3 rds 15-foot pull up jumpers @ 5 spots (baselines, top of key, wing)
  • 3 rds pull up 3-pointers @ 5 spots (baselines, top of key, wing)
  • 50 freethrows (takes not makes)

generic workout for dribbling Do every day if possible, AT LEAST 3x/week:

  • (20x each) 1 hand pound dribbles
  • (20x each) 1 hand quick tap dribbles
  • (20x) up and down ball taps (between hands)
  • (20x each way) front crossover
  • (20x each way) back crossover
  • (20x each way) between legs --left leg front
  • (20x each way) between legs -- right leg front
  • (20x each way) between legs "neutral stance"
  • (10x each direction) full court crossovers (front, back, and between legs)
  • (10x each hand) sprint from half court while dribbling, stop & crossover @ 3 point line, then drive and finish at rim
