When I started I found that this worked really well to get my seed started.

It’s a dome with a wicking mat that I picked up from Home Depot for about 10$. In my case I put the seedling directly in the rockwool and just placed it in the dome and the wicking mat maintained the perfect amount of moisture for the seed. But with this method there’s a chance that it can sprout upside down, so using the Mephisto germination technique might be a good idea. I simply had trouble when transferring the sprouted seed from the paper towel to the rockwool so I opted for direct planting instead.

Once the roots started poking out of the bottom of the starter cube I dropped that into a 2.5x2.5” cube and put it back dome on the mat until the roots poked through that cube as well while feeding ~12.5% - 25% of the amount of nutrient solution recommended for seedlings (particular to the line of nutes I’m using).

After the roots came out of the bottom of the second cube I filled my bucket so that the water level was 1.5” below the bottom of my rockwool with the hydroton in the basket (line up the top of your rockwool with the top of the bucket). Once that’s done, gently backfill the rest of the hydroton and you should be in the clear as long as your humidity is good. My tent seems to run very dry with DWC (25-30% RH) so I kept the clear lid of the dome on top of the bucket for an additional week or two while the plant really took hold.

Edit: a little more info

I would also say keep a very close eye on your PH throughout and have lots of air (bubble) going into the bucket as well. I used an air pump rated for a 60 gallon this one in particular and ran a hose from each pump into a T joint so that only one hose went into my bucket where I hooked it up to the largest round air stone I could find to get and get nice and even coverage.

Other than that all I really did was watch the amount of nutrients that I’m adding, trained the plant as needed, and tried to keep her happy.
