  • I recommend Arm and Hammer clumping Dust Free litter to start. The dust-free part is great and Arm&Hammer has a solid rep.

  • Keep plastic bags by the litter box (7$/Package of three hundred or so for the store bought and free if you use grocery store bags).


  • Clean litter box every time you see something in it. Multiple times per day.


  • I recommend Bissell Enzyme Pet Stain & Odor Eliminator product for smells. It even gets rid of unneutered cat smells, which are probably the worst cat smells that exist. - - Make sure cats are out of room when you spray it.


  • Vacuum once a week at minimum due to extra foot traffic from animals as well as hairs. I vacuum more though, whenever it looks like it could use it.


  • DO NOT leave wet food out after feeding. Feed enough that they eat what is there and put the rest away, like in a ziploc or something. Wet food can get really stinky when left out and attracts bugs like crazy. Don't even leave the dish it was on out.


  • Wash the water bowl every few days. Stagnant water causes smells and attracts bugs - it will also be healthier for your cat.

    I appreciate cleanliness and have tried a bunch of stuff and this is what seems to work. I will often test for smells using other people just to make sure.


    The specific odor eliminator I mentioned took a while to settle on and find something that actually works for cat smells. I went through a lot of that 'natural' bullshit and it was absolute failure every single time. I'm still salty about the wasted money and feel scammed.
