Thermal insulated blackout curtains are amazing. They make a huge difference. Available from amazon with free next day delivery. Those come in a bunch of sizes and colors. And they work! No light gets through and the heat is noticeably less with them closed.
I just bought these for my game room and they work as they should (install within the recessed area of the windows if you have, that eliminates any light escaping through the side). You still need a rod.
