First things first, the best thing to do while he's training is to set him up for success by blocking his view. Put furniture in front of it, heavy curtains or blinds, or put this stuff directly on the glass. I recently covered my bedroom windows with that exact product because my cats were destroying my headboard and curtains getting up there to look at birdies all the time, works great and super easy to install. Cheap too. Bonus, if you rent, it peels right off if you move.

Once you block his view, the problem may fix itself. You don't have to block the whole window, just the parts he can get to and see out of.

If he's still barking at the shadows or sounds of people walking by, work on redirection. I'm sure you've tried calling him away, but make it really worth his while. Barking at passersby is very self rewarding. They are near, he barks, and they go away. To him, barking works. You have to show him that another option is the more rewarding one. Try his favorite treats. If that doesn't work, physically move him to a spot he can't see out(gently please), while saying some sort of "off" command(use whatever you want, say banana, it doesn't matter)and once you get him away, give him a treat for calming down. Do a lot of practice of saying your command when no one is there. Then practice with another person(you said we so I'll assume spouse/roommate/whatever). Have them go outside and practice your "come to me and calm" command. Once he realizes that he gets treats for leaving that spot, he'll pick you over it.

Alternatively, you can teach a "place" command(again, you can say "bed" or whatever you want)by luring him to his "place" and rewarding him for going. This can be practiced 100x a day with or without someone walking by. Use high value treats mixed with something a little less high value, keep the order random. Eventually, he'll go to his "place" every time, hoping this time is the time he gets the big deal treat. Then you can phase out getting treats every time to getting treats sometimes and praise sometimes. Again, keep it random.

The whole goal, no matter what method you choose, is to make listening to your command way more rewarding than barking. Make a big deal when he succeeds, he just did the best thing ever! Dogs are opportunists, once they get the hang of it, they'll choose the better reward every single time.

So my friend and I are moving into our first apartment together and my first apartment outside of college EVER! It's super exciting but also nerve wracking! We found an awesome temporary space. The only issue is that my friends room and my room would share a wall with a door in between. I wouldn't use this door to go in and out of the apartment rooms because it'll cross through my friends room and also because I have my own separate door into the hallway I can use. My friends room technically has 3 doorways but two don't have actual doors in them. She doesn't mind because she'll just put curtains in.

I, on the other hand, do mind that although my room is fully enclosed by two doors, the one that is shared with my friends room has gaps in it and doesn't touch the floor totally. I get anxious thinking about sound pouring through which I know will happen regardless because the walls are thin. Also because I have a boyfriend and my friend is 100% okay with him spending time and we're not going to awkwardly fuck while she's in the other room if we can help it but I do like talking to him into the night and I just want to be a respectful roomate.

How can I close the gaps in the door and sound proof it more. Right now my thoughts are to put towels into the gaps, maybe a sound proofing curtain like the one in the link below and I could also put a tiny dresser in front of the door to just block it more?

https://www.amazon.com/NICETOWN-Blackout-Curtains-Panels-Bedroom/dp/B015SJ7RYY/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1518754246&sr=8-2

Again, I don't need this door because I have my own separate door that lead into the hallway and not to my friends room directly. I hope this makes sense!

We are subletting this place and my guy is cool with us putting doors in for my friends room but I obviously felt weird asking if I could replace his door. That's way to over the top. Any other ideas on what I can do?

Here's a pic of the door:

https://imgur.com/7tmM4wn

Sorry for the shit picture but essentially the pic of of my friends room and that red door leads to my room as well. Again I won't use it because there is a separate door in my room that leads to the main hallway. You can just see those gaps though and I tested out the noise and you can easily hear what one another is doing. Thoughts? Apologies in advance if this is confusing.

I have a light that I'm particularly fond of, but I find its beam too focused and "throwy" for edc use, so I made a removable diffuser for it.

I started with DC Fix film. Its a common product sold as a window treatment. I've used it before on other lights, but I wanted it to be easily removable in this case. So here's what I did:

First, I laid a bit of Saran Wrap out on my kitchen counters as smoothly as I could and stuck a square of DC Fix right in the flattest spot. Then I laid my light's bezel upside down on the square to use as a template. After tracing and cutting around the resulting circle, I'm left with a small circle of DC Fix, stuck to clingy Saran Wrap. It'll easily stick to my kitchen windows. With the light reassembled, it just lays right in.

It seems to stick very well and doesn't fall out on its own. I can't get it out by hand at all, not even with my fingernails. I have to take the point of a knife along the edge to pop it up out of there. Time will tell, but I think it'll hold up quite well.

To show the effects, I took two whitewall beamshots at pretty close range, probably 1.5 meters or so with camera on full manual, so no funky exposure tricks. Then I took two "real world" beamshots in my kids' toyroom at about 4 meters. Again the camera was on full manual but it kinda overexposed a bit. I should've taken a bit more time with it, set up a tripod, etc, but I didn't. Hopefully its still illustrative of the difference.

  • Whitewall shot, non-diffused
  • Whitewall shot, diffused
  • Toys, non-diffused
  • Toys, diffused

In addition, I put the light to my homemade "Integrating Amazon Box" and found about a 10% reduction in output -- 222 lumens without the film, 197 with. As should be expected, however, it feels like a bigger drop since the light is more diffused.

I really like the beam that results from using the DC Fix on a small focused light. If you've got an edc light that you really like but you wish were a bit more floody, maybe give this a try.

Hey I'm not the OP, for more info please go to the original post to congratulate them. :)

Personally I DO live in a van, it's a 1992 Chevy G20 Gladiator. I have a memory foam mattress on top of a wooden platform, totes and cardboard boxes for storage (food, clothing, etc.) underneath. having the mattress off the floor gives space for storage, and also insulates the mattress from the heat or cold of the ground.

For privacy I have tinted windows, non-adhesive window film, collapsible foil sunshade for the front window, and black bug screen mesh like this for the side windows.

For water I use sturdy Arizona tea jugs. I have a basic Coleman camping toilet for nighttime and emergency uses - some people simply use pee bottles or five gallon buckets.

If it's cold at night I have a [12V electric blanket](https://www.walmart.com/ip/TREKSAFE-12-Volt-Heated-Travel-Blanket-White/54609929] and/or a 12V "car seat" warmer that I put under the mattress. I also have a propane Little Buddy heater which I have not yet used.

My main luxury item is an Alpicool C15 refrigerator powered by two 35AH "house batteries" (in parallel) which are charged using a Battery Doctor isolator. The Battery Doctor is run by my alternator when I drive-it only starts charging the house batteries after my van battery is full. The fridge uses 5.8AH per day. I used a cooler for a year, but the drawbacks are constantly buying or procuring ice (like from soda fountains), and food spoilage from it getting waterlogged, plus having to drain it frequently.

For hot meals, I use a 12 volt "lunchbox cooker" (works similar to a crock pot) which is powered in my cigarette lighter while I drive (or I can run it with the house batteries through a 12v splitter - the Alpicool is plugged into the other side. I also have a propane camping stove which I have never used.

I have a USB mini fan to run at night, or I can run my small regular fan through the 300W power inventor where I can also charge my laptop and/or phone (I usually charge the phone in the cigarette lighter).

I don't make any money if you buy from any of these links, but I only used them for illustrative purposes - I encourage you to shop around on Craigslist, eBay, Amazon, Walmart, check yard sales, etc. find the best priced similar item that works best for you. You don't have to get everything all at once - I didn't. But if you can get a basic minivan or van (seats removed), a mattress (or sleeping bag even) on a frame, and some jugs of water, it's a start.

Congratulations, how exciting to live on your own!

I would recommend black out curtains, unless you don't have a problem sleeping with light. I just bought some myself as they're multi-purpose.

  1. They keep the sun out....seriously like 98% of it. Which is nice if it's hot or you're trying to sleep.

  2. They help increase energy efficiency by keeping the cold air out.

I have a ton of other ideas as to things you should have, if you're interested!

    Thanks for the contest!

    you're a big girl now!

reddiquette I made one of these a while back, here's how I made it. Obviously feel free to the substitute the materials I listed for whatever you want. The final product (I'll post pics later) wasn't exactly beautiful, but it works!

Materials:

-Some type of container that will make up the structure of your infinity mirror. I used a paper mache box that is sturdy and able to easily open up

-A mirror. This should be a similar size to the container above.

-Adhesive film with a transparent side and a mirror side

-Plexiglass

-Something to cut the plexiglass with

-Some sweet lights

-Glue

Steps:
(for the purpose of keeping it simple I'm going to assume the materials are the same ones I used that are listed above).

  1. Cut out the bottom of the box (the part that doesn't lift up) so that the whole mirror (minus the edges) is visible when the box is open.
  2. Glue the edges of the mirror to the edges of the box so that is firmly in place
  3. Cut the plexiglass with the special plexiglass cutting tool so that it is exactly the same length and width as the top face of box. This step might be a little difficult as the plexiglass is kinda thick. I found that cutting it from either side and then 'snapping' it produced a nice clean break
  4. Cut the adhesive film to the same length and width of the piece of plexigalss you just cut
  5. On ONE side of the plexiglass, stick on the adhesive film so that it fully covers one side. Try and make it as smooth as possible without any air bubbles/wrinkles - think of it as putting on a screen protector on a phone
  6. Cut a hole in the top of the box leaving around an inch on each side
  7. Open the box up and using the glue, stick the piece of plexiglass to the underside of the top face using the inch margins on each side. NOT THAT THE FILM MIRROR SIDE OF THE PLEXIGLASS SHOULD FACE INWARDS TOWARD THE BOX)
  8. With the box still open, stick the LED lights around the inside perimeter of the side of the box. There may be some excess length which is fine
  9. Cut a hole in the side of the box large enough for any excess lights and the controller to fit through and then pull them thru so that they are on the outside of the box.
  10. Close the box up and turn on the lights! The ones I recommended have a ton of different color, flashing and speed settings so you can create some pretty cool effects.

I know that at first glance this might look pretty confusing. As soon as I get some time I'll post some pics of each stage to help with the explanations, as even reading back on them they do sound somewhat confusing!
u/someshmo Ā· 8 pointsr/malelivingspace

With the current setup, I'd consider moving that Aeon F. print (!) to the wall with your Kesey poster print. Awesome wall art, btw. I'd put a floating wood shelf on the TV wall, painted off-white to match your baseboards and that Hudson Bay Point blanket. I'd stick a small row of vintage paperbacks on it and a couple bookshelf speakers for the oncoming record player. Bluetooth to avoid the wires, if possible.

I'd put the turntable on a small stand on the right, below the art, utilizing that plug. Or I'd get a new console with clean lines that takes up most of the TV wall and can accommodate both.

I'd say you need a bigger rug, partly tucked under the sofa. Some sort of 'faded navy' seems right to me-- either flatwoven, or a distressed pattern like the current rug. That way you could connect with the beige walls of the unit (the faded), but tie in with the red and yellow of your art and the Hudson throw (navy).

The current format is home office one side, living area the other. Seems like you enjoy reading, and want to collect some records, but don't want to live in a home library. If that's the case, I'd consider media storage on the desk side. You could move the desk a bit and put a row of Kallax behind the sofa. This also would make a surface for reading lamps / plants / decor... or MacBook when sitting at the desk. But it means you're walking in to a wall of books and records.

The other option is to put it on the door wall. This would make the room divide less heavy. Provide an entry surface for keys and mail. And you could move the plants off the sill for easier blinds action. Side note- I'd consider a strip of [privacy film] (https://www.amazon.com/RABBITGOO-Privacy-Frosted-Adhesive-Bathroom/dp/B01MTA00AX/ref=pd_lpo_vtph_201_bs_t_1/143-0898377-8791034?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=5K4MXTX1QYKNSSPA8073) on the window bottoms. Either way, this would probably require a smaller desk and/or tweaking.

Other thoughts- I'd go white (or baseboard off-white) for the blackout curtains. A burnt yellow planter on the table. Paint the corkboard frame black. One thing- the coffee table looks very tall in the pics. Hairpin legs are pretty affordable on Amazon. Love that wooden tray in the bathroom.

u/KestrelLowing Ā· 1 pointr/dogs

Yup! My older dog used to bark at quite a bit when we lived in an apartment, but we managed to get her to mostly stop (granted, she's not a hugely barky dog - she's more of the talkative type)

The first think you'll need to do is management when you're not directly training. This means covering up windows (something like this might be a good option) so your dog can't see what's going on outside, and a white noise machine or something (my best has been those super crappy box fans they sell during college student move in - the cheaper the better because you want loud!) to block sounds.

Now that you've got that done, then you start counter conditioning the behavior. A great method to use is outlined here. If your dog is barking at things that are sporadic and can't be replicated by you, it is more difficult, but be on the lookout to see if you can manage to train with those distractions. But you may have to enlist friends to help you out with people walking by!

As for when it happens, I tend to then use negative punishment. If my dog barks inappropriately, they get a time out. I usually put them in the bathroom for about 10-20 seconds. More if they get super worked up and need to calm down. If once I let them out they bark again, they go back into the bathroom for another 10-20 seconds. Repeat ad-nauseum until they don't bark at the stimulus, and then reward heavily!

u/freewaytrees Ā· 4 pointsr/PlantedTank

I'll tag team this one:

  1. That would work but they make specialized ones that work great

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0126416XW?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

  2. Some sort of privacy film on the back so that it lets in light but hides what's behind the tank

    https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MTA00AX?ref=yo_pop_ma_swf

  3. Epic.

  4. Up Aqua or GLA both make some reliable units

Totally agree about fish preferring the jungle/more densely planted tanks.... You really see their colors and natural behavior come out a lot more. After seeing the latest IAPLC results I'm wondering if the "Brazilian style" scapes provide enough sense of security.
u/wild_b_cat Ā· 2 pointsr/legaladvice

Then maybe it would be best to try to obscure the window rather than the balcony. There are lots of ways to do that.

My wife and I had a similar problem; she hated being exposed but I didn't want to lose the natural light. What we found worked was to apply something like this to the glass:

https://www.amazon.com/RABBITGOO-Privacy-Frosted-Adhesive-Bathroom/dp/B01MTA00AX/ref=sr_1_2_sspa?ie=UTF8&qid=1524614568&sr=8-2-spons&keywords=window+frosting+film&psc=1

... which gave us privacy while preserving natural light. Because we wanted to have some ability to see out, we didn't cover the entire window with it, just the center portion. It makes a nice effect, and it's easy to see out but still nearly impossible to see anything inside.

u/Gun5linger67 Ā· 6 pointsr/IndoorGarden

Put some Window Film like this on your windows. I live in the high desert and i did this to our windows and the plants are absolutely thriving. You can get really cool styles of film or get creative and create designs that are both useful and decorative. On one of my windows I cut the film to look like mountains that reach 3/4 of the way up the window. Then I hung some Full Sun plants to block out excess sunlight and now I have a curtain of green. I hope this helps and Good Luck!

u/coherent-rambling Ā· 3 pointsr/flashlight

I don't think so, but only because of the high CRI request. The Jetbeam E10R, Fenix RC05, and Skilhunt M150 all meet most of your other criteria (the Jetbeam is pretty focused, though it's actually got the nicest LED). You could look into swapping LEDs on any of those, or you could just get the Jetbeam and slap on some DC Fix to flood out the beam. It won't be high-CRI, but it'll have nice tint.

u/emeraldsama Ā· 1 pointr/chinchilla

The other suggestions of cloth wrapped ice packs are worth trying, but I'd look at how to make the AC more efficient.

  1. Can you move the cage closer to the AC? Even if the whole room is warmer, the area closest to the AC will be cooler.

  2. If there's windows in the room, add window film to insulate and decrease heat coming it - it's cheap and easily removable if you rent (I rent and have them up). Just make sure it's non-adhesive, static cling film. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/Gila-Privacy-Static-Residential-Adhesive/dp/B000HE57JS or this one https://www.amazon.com/FILMGOO-Privacy-Control-Anti-UV-Non-Adhesive/dp/B07CYY7PQW/

  3. You could make or buy a solar (or battery) powered swamp cooler. In small spaces it can work shockingly well, but it's annoying to have to check the water level every few hours. You can also buy swamp coolers prefabbed, but if money is a concern you can DIY it. https://www.google.com/search?q=solar+swamp+cooler

My boy starts looking uncomfortable over 76, so I would be very worried keeping him in temps of 80+. I shoot for 72 degrees and he seems comfortable plus or minus a few degrees of that.

Refrigerated stone slabs do help for short term relief, but ultimately you need to keep the temp down. Chinchilla don't sweat, and can't release body heat that way. If you aren't comfortable in a long sleeve shirt or sweater in the room they're in, then it's too hot for the chins.
u/manatee1010 Ā· 2 pointsr/Dogtraining

It sounds like theyā€™re partially attention seeking, and potentially partially thinking that your wife is ā€œbarkingā€ at something outside the window.

I have two suggestions.

First, prevention. Specifically, opaque window film. If that doesnā€™t do enough to prevent the barking, a white noise machine on a low setting near the window might help as well.

Second, I recommend also desensitizing and teaching an alternate behavior. My recommendation is to get each dog a bed to keep in the room, and teach both dogs to go to their bed and wait quietly on cue. As part of that process, Iā€™d recommend your wife have her phone out and pretend to talk on the phone while simultaneously dropping/tossing treats in the dogsā€™ beds. Building up a strong reinforcement history for quietly hanging out in their beds will be one of your best tools in breaking this habit.

u/octobereighth Ā· 4 pointsr/legaladvice

I live in a HOA that has a rule that only "white-backed curtains" may be visible in a window. I also have a fucking floodlight pointing directly into my bedroom window.

It took trying out several different brands, but we were eventually able to find curtains that block almost all of the light. It'll never be pitch black in that room, but it's much better now than before. They also make light-blocking curtains that have thermal insulation. Sleep like the dead has a list of their top picks. I'm pretty sure these are the ones we ended up with in the end, but again we tried out a bunch of different ones so I could be wrong.

Good luck!

u/jewpha1979 Ā· 5 pointsr/puppy101

When my puppy notices something from the window I immediately get his attention before barking and get him to sit and treat him for it. He then watches silently, weā€™re still working on it but I have noticed a slight improvement.

I also bought this for a different reason/not dog related and I love it! still get the natural light in.

u/jareths_tight_pants Ā· 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

This brand and style is completely opaque but still lets a good amount of light in. I used it on my rental windows for blacking out sunlight but it did not block enough light for me to sleep during the day. Would work great for privacy though. And itā€™s white so it will just look like curtains from a distance.

Do you have Instagram? Check out "takingcarababies". She offers different types of classes that you can pay for, but I have gotten SO much good, free advice just from following her posts.

I also second what people are saying about the blackout curtains and sound machines. I got these for blackout curtains--they are cheap and efficient. You want something that actually blocks all light, which most curtains don't do.

Two questions:

  • Can you make an infinity mirror out of two two-way mirrors instead of one normal mirror and one two-way mirror? If you did that, would you see the tunnel effect no matter which side you look through?

  • Anyone know any good (cheaper) LED strips which could be programed through Arduino? I'm looking to make a small portable infinity mirror this summer, but I'd like to program it to change settings from an external controller...

EDIT: Loving the feedback! To elaborate on the first question... I'm thinking of making an infinity mirror that I can bring with to a music festival and carry around... so I don't want to use a mirror with glass because I'd hate for it to break and get glass everywhere. I've been wondering if the effect would still be present if I attached one-way film like this to two plexiglass circles. Any ideas?
u/zebradust Ā· 7 pointsr/InteriorDesign

I use blackout curtains in addition to my wooden blinds. They block out more light and heat (when closed of course), help with energy bills, and still come in a variety of patterns/colors (depending on where you get them). They run more pricy than regular curtains but they're definitely worth it to me. They are a bit heavier, too, so make sure you use the rod recommended on the box. I've gotten them at Walmart, but here's an Amazon page to check them out. I have navy ones but I don't think colors matter as long as they have the special backing on them for the heat.

Ditch that dark corner shelf and get some nice over-toilet storage (one | two) that you can organize with baskets, bins, folded towels, etc. Weed out any bath products you're not using.

Replace the curtains with something more modern and light (one | two)! You could even just put some privacy film over the window so you don't lose any light. Add a hanging plant or lantern (to warm up the lighting) to the corner above the toilet, and a tall laundry basket or wastebasket next to the sink.

As others have mentioned, a rug is a great idea - they also make ones that fit around toilets (one | two).

u/derrick81787 Ā· 3 pointsr/preppers

There's propane and/or kerosene heaters. Just be sure to crack a nearby window just in case.

Warm clothes, blankets, and sleeping bags will do alright. It would have to be very cold for a long time before you were really in danger of freezing.

Lighting a few candles in a small bedroom will keep you warmer than you would think.

If you are asking then I'm assuming that you probably don't have one of these, but a wood stove is great. If all you have is a fireplace, it will heat the area directly in front of it but not much more. Just hang out in front of the fireplace for a few days.

No matter what you do, you want to cover up the doors and windows with a heavy blanket or curtain or something. In fact, in general it is good to have some thermal curtains like these (many different brands out there) on all your windows. We added some this year, and it has made a huge difference in our gas bill.

True one way mirrors are expensive, but I think most people are using a piece of plain glass and then putting a good quality mirror film on it. With it being mounted on a wall and being dark on the backside and light on the front side, it will function just like a one-way mirror. I guess the trick is getting good film and applying it correctly to the glass.

u/jaimystery Ā· 1 pointr/DIY

A cheap solution:

Buy six Command hooks - the sturdier variety. Buy a thicker dowel rod and either sand or paint it to make it smooth. Buy tab top black out panel.

Use a level and put three hooks on either side of the door close together but you want to put 1 up - 1 down - 1 up. You'll probably have to finagle putting on the curtain with threading it on the hooks. (The 2 up 1 down hook assembly should help keep your dowel in place as you move the curtain).

It would actually be easier if you used two panels (or take 1 longer panel and split it - a cheaper option).

Another solution would be buying foam core (comes in 4x8ft panels about $15), cutting it to size and just sliding it back and forth. If you want fancy it up - get a cheap twin size duvet cover & use as envelope for the foam.

GET. BLACKOUT. CURTAINS.

Don't delay. The second you have money get those damn things. If you have to skip a meal to afford them. Do it. I spent the first two weeks of my job without them and was miserable. I would go to bed late and wake up throughout the day non damn stop. The first day I hung them up and slept, I felt so refreshed. They are worth every penny. Get these and a rod to hang them up. Then tape them to the sides so no light can slip through. After that get yourself an alarm to wake you up. Your eyes rely on light to fully wake you. So either get a smart lightbulb that turns on when you wake up or get a lamp that you can turn on easily.

You get off at 6 which is perfect. Go to sleep right when you get home and shoot to wake up at 4 pm. This gives you ample time to run errands and be there for your partner of they work day shift. On your off days you don't have to follow your sleep schedule strictly but find hobbies you can do that won't wake everyone up while also keeping you awake for a good bit of the night.

The biggest hurdle for you is going to be morning activities. Early appointments or social gatherings will be rough. But take power naps when you can and invest in energy drinks or coffee if you are going to be up for a while.

Night shift is great but you need to make adjustments. When it comes to the dating scene, he open and honest about your work schedule. Depending on your area, you might not have to worry too much but that all depends.

Last but not least, if you start a family get off night shift. This shift is not designed for families. I have seen and heard stories about guys on this shift destroying their marriage/getting distant with their kids because they were too stubborn to admit this shift isn't designed for the family man. If you are worried about a paycut talk with your supervisor. At my work you just lose your shift premium but can still keep your seniority. It could be different. But docking your pay to keep your family is worth it in my opinion.

If you're struggling to get 8 hours a night, you can focus on deepening the sleep you do get instead of sleeping longer.

  • Black out your room at night. This is the biggest one for me. I have cheap blackout shades and I use electrical tape to cover internet routers, smoke alarms - anything that flashes. Get your room dark enough that you can't see your hand in front of your face. Even a little light will fuck with your melatonin production and compromise your sleep quality.

  • If you use electronics at night, download f.lux. It's a free program that removes blue light from your monitor after the sun sets. Your phone should have night mode under settings; turn that on as well. Light in the blue spectrum is the biggest melatonin disruptor.

  • Take 400 mg of magnesium citrate or magnesium glycinate before bed. It eases stress and causes a dramatic increase in sleep quality. Plus, a good percentage of the population is deficient in magnesium, so you could probably use a little extra anyway. If you go for magnesium citrate, start at 200 mg and move up to 400 mg over the course of a couple days. Too much at once will make you shit your pants. Glycinate doesn't have that issue, but isn't quite as bioavailable.

  • Take 300 mcg of melatonin right before bed. Melatonin is a hormone your body uses to encourage deep sleep, and taking it in pill form will knock you right out. It's prescription in the UK, over-the-counter in the US. Most doses are far too high (2-10 mg), and can impair your natural melatonin production if you take them regularly without a break. Stick with 300mcg (linked above); it's the minimum effective dose and won't mess with your hormones long-term.

  • I also drink kava tea on nights when I really can't sleep. It's more for stress relief/anxiety than for sleep, but if you find you have trouble winding down at night it can be a big help. Don't drink alcohol alongside kava; the active compounds, kavalactones, bind to the same brain receptors that alcohol does, meaning the effects of the two stack.

  • Don't take sleeping pills if you can avoid them. I'm not a doctor, and I'm not saying you should ignore your doctor, but sleeping pills don't actually put you into stage 3 and stage 4 sleep (the deep, restorative sleep your brain needs). They can also cause a lot of neurological side effects.

I'm building one right now as a christmas gift for my fiance. I wanted to build a prototype first though before shelling out big bucks for the real double sided mirrors.

So I just went with a sheet of plexiglass and [Gila Reflective Film (I paid $30).] (https://www.amazon.ca/Gila-Window-Films-PRS361-Residential/dp/B000H5XTKG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1480890454&sr=8-3&keywords=window+film+gila) It actually looks surprisingly good. I think I'll just buy a glass ikea frame and try that out. Unless she wants to do makeup with it, that's probably good enough.

  1. Declutter

  2. Get some frosted window film and apply it to the glass doors in your desk cabinets. That way you can hide away your clutter without anyone seeing it.

  3. Whatever the ribbons and stuff on the wall are, they need to be moved. You might consider putting a big slab of cork board where they are hanging too...to give you a spot to attach important papers, reminders, photos etc etc

  4. Your bookshelf is overloaded at the top, and virtually empty at the bottom. Evenly distribute the weight so that the boards don't sag. Fill in any extra space on the shelfs with the knick knacks that are currently cluttering your desk.

  5. mount a hook somewhere to hang your earphones

  6. Consider getting a monitor mounting arm for your PC monitor. The Amazon Basics Single Arm monitor mount is 100 bucks, but its built like a tank. Being able to move the monitor and have it floating gives you more usable desk space and it would allow you to move your monitor directly in front of your webcam in case you needed to show someone something on the monitor during a video chat.

  7. I would consider replacing the desk lamp with something that puts all the light directly on the desk. You have a floor uplight in the background giving you plenty of indirect light. You don't need to stare at a lit up globe all day on your desk too

You're a bit late to the game for commissioned costumes. I'd recommend you make a circular base out of worbla or a different heat moldable plastic.

For the see through screen, there are plenty of options. A one way glass film, a clear sheet with chrome spray paint lightly sprayed over it, or a pre-made chrome sheet (make sure it's see thru).

If you google a daft punk helmet tutorial, you can probably pick some useful tips up there :-)

It took three tries! I mixed a small amount of Dawn into a little mini spray bottle from the dollar store to apply it. It comes with a little razor knife and squeegee too. If you can afford it I would recommend buying a nice piece of two way tinted glass. This way definitely works tho for cheap!

u/probably_jelly Ā· 20 pointsr/malelivingspace

I know you asked for curtain suggestions, but I'm guessing your concern is related to the heat and glare from the sun, and not privacy? IF it's the heat/glare, I'd suggest mirrored film instead of curtains. My SO and I have a trawler, and many of the windows have unusual shapes that don't really allow for curtains. We got these and they work like a dream. Much cooler, and (just slightly) reduces the brightness.

u/silverecco Ā· 1 pointr/flashlight

SC5w is an excellent choice. It doesn't get much better for a single AA, but it might not be much floodier than the LD20. A 10Ā° hotspot is fairly tight, it's probably because of the smaller XPL2 emitter. They do have an SC5 with a frosted lens, although the LED is markedly inferior to the new version. Shoot who knows, maybe you can use some frosted window cling or something on the lens if it turns out to be too focused.

The Olight S1 Mini Baton and S1 Baton can run on both RCR123s or primaries. CW only unless you want to dish out extra for the titanium ones (S Mini [Similar to, but different than the S1 Mini])(S1 Baton) to get NW.

My recommendations are all single-cell compact lights, but if you're used to carrying a 2xAA light and have a budget of $100, there are tons of options, especially with 18650 lights that can use 123s as backup. 18650s and a charger will set you back ~$30-40, but $60 leaves MANY possibilities. Parametrek will probably roll up any second and plug the Wowtac A1S because it comes as a complete kit for $30, but it doesn't say it supports 2xCR123. It might, but it doesn't say officially. Might be too throwy.

Thrunite Neutron 2C is a total kit, but might also be too throwy.

Depending on whether it can accept the 6.0V from 2xCR123, a triple configuration in a Convoy S2+ would be super bright, total flood light.

EDIT: Was wrong about the emitter in the frosted Zebra

u/RikerOmega3 Ā· 1 pointr/malelivingspace

A splash of color via artwork on the empty wall would do wonders.

Maybe some nature scenes with greens and blues and some reds and oranges in the sky.

Another thing you could do is grab a few small green throw pillows. to kinda bring the green plants into the bed space some.

And lastly, have you considered static cling window coverings? You could do something like that and not only would you get some privacy while still letting in sun for your plants. The stuff is easy to put on. There are kits on amazon as well that is essentially soapy water and applicator. You cut the film to size, peel off the clear plastic backing (think peeling off the paper on a bandaid) spray down the window, stick it on, and squeegy out the bubbles

Leaves no permanent damage to the windows. [I have this one on some of my windows at home and I love it.] (https://www.amazon.com/Rabbitgoo-Privacy-Decorative-Non-Adhesive-Control/dp/B01JFILPIS/ref=pd_sim_201_7?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B01JFILPIS&pd_rd_r=FXNG9W7RVMZY9J38A80R&pd_rd_w=tpIK6&pd_rd_wg=9EMU8&psc=1&refRID=FXNG9W7RVMZY9J38A80R)

u/TheShandyMan Ā· 1 pointr/raspberry_pi

I bought this for mine; using Plexi instead of glass. The effect works fine but it's very easy to get bubbles if you're not careful, and with Plexi if you screw up you basically have to start over (with glass you could peel, use acetone to clean and try again).

Depends on the feel you want for the room, whether you want to be able to see the view through the doors and if you want to bring color or energy into the room with fabric. If it were me and I wasnt painting the walls in there, I would put matchstick blinds on the pair of windows - the glow of light through the wood is warm and bring some natural texture to the party, and it relates to the wood floor. If I wanted to be able to see the view I would probably put up a rod and do grommet curtain panels in a bold pattern on the doorwall that you can open and close. Navy and white would be on trend and go with your wood, and a bold large print pattern would liven up the whole wall. If you dont want to see the view but want light to come in I would go with window film. I have used many different types and patterns, but for privacy simple frosted or lenicular/holographic (has a broken glass look but will cast rainbows all over your room, example here https://www.amazon.com/RABBITGOO-Decorative-Privacy-Non-Adhesive-Control/dp/B00RDVD56U?ref_=fsclp_pl_dp_2 ) my favorites.

one thing i would recommend, assuming there is no vertical shaft and it is just a little nook, is to put soundproofing foam on the walls and ceiling of that little alcove. make a little drape to go across the outside and get some sound deadening cloth and make a little "anti-boom" box for when there is thunder or fireworks or she just wants a nice safe quiet place. i have built a few of them for people in my neighborhood, we live close enough to disneyland and doggos FREAK THE FUCK OUT every night when they launch the fireworks. you can make a pretty nice "anti-boom" box for less than 100 dollars.

If you want to get some blackout curtains that aren't actually curtains (for the strangulation risk), I highly recommend these paper ones

They're pleated and made of paper. You can cut them to length (or width) and they come with clips so you can fold them up and secure them!

u/jbrake Ā· 2 pointsr/SaltLakeCity

I put up blackout tint on my car when I have to leave it unattended for a while. It removes easily with warm water and soap. Coupled with a dashboard shield and I've never had problems in UT, SC, or MO.

u/noncongruent Ā· 1 pointr/DIY

Are you allowed to change the look of the windows from the outside? If you are, then I'd go with removable window tint like this: https://www.amazon.com/Gila-PB78-Privacy-Residential-36-Inch/dp/B000HE57JS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1494825042&sr=8-2&keywords=removable+window+tint

It's dry and held on by static electricity, so removing it is easy and leaves no residue.

u/EdenSB Ā· 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

You're a big girl now!

These are very useful for someone who needs to sleep during the day. They're also good for keeping the heat in/out of your apartment which can help on heating bills. If you get them, make sure to choose the right size and style.

A cheaper option would be a sleep mask set, but that doesn't seem to fit in the 'for my apartment' theme and some people aren't comfortable with them.

u/FuzzyRocket Ā· 2 pointsr/cosplay

Ave you thought of the window tint film they sell like this? I have used on a gas mask and a set of glasses I made. I have found the flatter the surface the better, but it may work for you.

u/SanityIsOptional Ā· 19 pointsr/AmItheAsshole

Put up a translucent piece of plastic/film, so people can't see thru the windows but light still gets in?

Something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Coavas-Adhesive-Frosted-Bathroom-17-7by78-7/dp/B00XHXU7PU

If you still wanted privacy but a curtain isn't feasible, you could perhaps try one of those films that you can stick to windows, something like this.

u/Caterpillarcait Ā· 20 pointsr/Parenting

u/knitpixie Ā· 2 pointsr/beyondthebump

If it were me, I get whatever curtains I liked the look of and then put one of these up in the window behind it.

u/voice_in_the_woods Ā· 3 pointsr/CatAdvice

I would assume there might be feral cats outside that they can smell and that might be winding them up. Talk to the vet about this as a possibility if you think it might be true. If it's a sight-related thing, i.e. they can see cats outside that are putting them on edge, you could cover the bottom of your windows with frosted film. If it's because ferals are spraying, you may need to look into ways to dissuade the ferals or get them moved.

If your vet deems it necessary, you may be able to get your cats on anti-anxiety meds, basically Prozac for cats.

u/TheDevitalizer Ā· 20 pointsr/DIY

I got the idea trolling around /r/diy, it has a mirror on the bottom, LED's in the middle (hole going down at a 45 degree angle in the side for the wires), and a piece of glass with a privacy reflective film applied to it.

The light bounces back and forth creating the 'tunnel' effect, while some of it escapes so you can see it.

u/mamyd Ā· 4 pointsr/DesignMyRoom

I would try some adhesive window covering. You can get simple ones like this or stained glass style ones. They're helpful at letting the light in but the the stares out.

It depends on the window film, some you can see out of, others you can't.

Mine which casts rainbows everywhere, I can't see out of.

This one or this one should allow you to see out of them.

u/emag Ā· 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

Since others are addressing the insulation, I'll tackle the blackout curtains. You know how when you stay in a hotel/motel, those really heavy & thick curtains that have the vinyl backing on them? Those are blackout curtains. In hotels (and home theaters), they're used to block out all incoming light (blacking out the room). They're also thick enough to provide some manner of insulation, preventing drafts & airflow to the rest of the room. Just a real quick search, and I found these and these. It'll certainly look better than the plastic shrink film, at least.

u/azriel777 Ā· 6 pointsr/BeAmazed

Here is a video explaining how to do it with led and show a small model. The TLDW video is that you create a box, have a mirror in the back, whatever you want to show on the inside of the box with lights, and the view part has a material that is reflective on one side (Plexiglass + mirrored window film put as the cover you see through and the reflective is on the inside).

u/napface Ā· 4 pointsr/succulents

u/Pertinaxed Ā· 1 pointr/Nootropics

Vitamin D helps to govern the circadian rhythm by signalling to the body that it's morning, so make sure you're taking it as early in the day as you possibly can. I take it with breakfast. To anyone supplementing with D3, I would also recommend taking supplemental vitamin K2.

Once I got into my early twenties I also lost my ability to sleep in late, and it pissed me off to no end. The eventual solution was combining blackout curtains with an eye mask. Now that the ambient morning light in my room has been dramatically reduced, I can sleep in again without any problems.

Do you exercise? I had terrible insomnia, depression, anxiety and fucked around with nootropics, antidepressants and therapy for a year. Then I started going to the gym for a 30-40 minute 600 calorie aerobic burn, twice a day every day, and it all cleared up in a matter of weeks. Not only do I sleep more soundly, but I also require less sleep than I did before.

The downsides? Nothing surprising: it's time-consuming, physically painful, and aesthetically repulsive (because you spend time in gyms). But after the first few weeks it becomes a routine, and even with all this, the benefits so dramatically outweigh the costs that I can't see myself ever stopping.

I'm not saying this will necessarily be the solution for you but if you haven't tried it yet, please make sure you do. I feel like a fucking moron for not figuring it out sooner. Part of the reason I stayed away from aerobics is that I was stuck on the Paleo bandwagon, and bought wholesale into the idea "chronic cardio" necessarily leads to "overtraining." Getting over that prejudice, and eating more carbs to support my training was the best thing I ever did for my health.

u/hadtoomuchtodream Ā· 15 pointsr/InteriorDesign
