Agree with Brother printers, and specifically their color lasers.

I've had dozens of printers over the years, ever since my dad bought my first Epson dot matrix printer for my C64.

I've never been happy with one until I got a Brother HL-3170 a few years ago.

Best printer I have ever owned.

I have this brother color laser printer and I have been beyond impressed with it. I bought it for printing out research reports during college and I have printed probably close to 10,000 pages on this thing by now. The toner life is insane. The only downside to this printer is that it bases toner levels off of pages printed, so you do have to go into the settings when it says the toner is low and "trick it" to thinking there's a new cartridge in it, and keep printing until it is actually empty.

With that minor annoyance considered, I have never had any networking issues printing wireless from either my phone, tablet, or computer. Would highly recommend the laser printer after going through several annoying inkjets. Brother seems to make a quality product

First of all, getting my own printer was the BEST choice I made as a teacher. I just keep it at school. I use it so much and I am mad at all the time I spent running around to jammed printers. Reading A to Z books, copies of stuff for meetings, even a class set of a warm up or coloring page when I don't feel like dealing with our schools equally shoddy copy machine. I got this brother model. I've replaced the ink about twice a year and I print A LOT.

You will love it!!

For demonstration purposes: yes.

I generally recommend against color printing. It's more expensive, and how often do you really do it? If you have meaningful photos to print, I think most people are better off having them printed instead. Other people may have more to add regarding color printing, but as always: beware of the inkjet model, where ink may cost you the firstborn you're trying to print pictures of.

$350?

The Brother printers I use for desktop printing are $150 for monochrome and $200 for color. I'm 100% onboard for throwing printers the fuck away if they have a problem more complicated than "paper jam."

Printer

Toner

Color is more expensive, but still it's like 6 cents per page.

u/Jeffbx · 2 pointsr/techsupport

Best case is laser - toner is dry so it lasts forever. With your low volume of printing, it's no surprise that your ink is drying up.

My recommendation is to get yourself a basic B&W laser printer - this one is a good choice. You'll go a year or 2 before you have to replace the toner.

If your kids really need color for school, go with the color version

Which printer? DCP-L2540DW or HL-L2340DW or HL-3170CDW?

DCP-L2540DW
HL-L2340DW
HL-3170CDW

Hey, new here. Planning to buy a laser printer for school as I need to print essays, reports and such, and sometimes I need color so preferably I want a printer with color. I looked around reddit and amazon and found these three.

The DCP has a scanner and more ppm than the others, and is only $10 more than the L2340, but I'm not an expert and maybe there's a catch here. But other than that I can't really see the difference other than price.

I don't need multi-function but it can be nice when I need to photocopy stuff.

I got curious and took a look.

Brother color laser printer <$200

Cheaper than the last inkjet printer I bought (admittedly over a decade ago).

Brother printers have always worked for me in Linux. This has a few of the features you listed:

u/andybuddy · 2 pointsr/talesfromtechsupport

I own a Brother one that has all of those features + duplex printing. Exactly $200.

The one I've used has been reliable and good. Third party toner is surprisingly cheap but may have slightly "off" tones. This is the model: https://www.amazon.com/Brother-HL-3170CDW-Wireless-Networking-Replenishment/dp/B00BQU141C/

With the third party toner we've been using (which is likely the cause) it tends to like to over-darken the blues by a bit. This absolutely isn't glossy photo print quality, but it'll happily print most color things well enough without any trouble.

I too got fed up with replacing a $30 cyan cartridge every 3 months when I just needed to print a B&W doc

I just bought this for $199 from Amazon, it's a color LED printer with wireless, you can print from an iPhone as well as a PC, it uses less than 1W while sleeping, and can print on both sides of the page

hopefully the last goddamn printer I ever buy

u/Blastercorps · 1 pointr/BuyItForLife

Ah, I overlooked that. There are color models though, this one was on sale a week ago.

I'm not that guy, but we have this one and use these. Never had an issue with it and a five pack basically lasts a whole year even with my wife in school.

Toner doesn't dry up and there's no DRM on the toner cartridges.

not that I know anything about printers, but i think i need this Brother Laser Printer http://www.amazon.ca/Brother-HL-3170CDW-Colour-Laser-Printer/dp/B00BQU141C/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pd_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=58VDRWS0PR6V&coliid=I35WKL2FESOWS0

I need it because I don't have a printer currently and i need to print labels for my coffee bags that I sell. I was just using labels and filling them in with marker but now that I have branding and a logo, I will be polishing up my coffee packaging for my little 'pet project' side coffee business.
