Yeah, that's the thing I think makes it interesting and hard to predict.

Personally, I actually prefer a cup of good black coffee, but I've started drinking (and starting to like) tea in an attempt to give myself more flexibility in my caffeine intake.

Basically, in the morning or afternoon, I'll drink coffee because I'm at work, and I might as well have as much of a kick as possible. After work, I've found that nothing screws my sleep schedule for days like taking a nap, because then I can't fall asleep when I need to. If I drink coffee after 6:00 pm, I'll basically get the same insomniac effect, so I'll drink black tea up until about 9:00 p.m. as necessary. If I need something extra to stay up after that, I'll drink green tea which is less caffeinated than black tea.

This is surprisingly effective. I can actually drink green tea even an hour before bedtime without it wiring me.

It's amazing how much the entire world runs on two chemicals: caffeine and ethanol. This is a really good book on the subject, btw. Even though it's out of print, it's written very well for the layman and yet does clearly explain the chemistry behind the two drugs very well. One of the most interesting books I've ever read.

There has been 1 caffeine overdose in the history of time. It was via IV, and by mistake. Source is this book.
