A couple of things to think of-I’ll add more as I think of them.

  1. Consider how heavily your upholstered furniture will be used. If it will receive light use, go ahead and try to do it yourself if you are game. If it’s going to receive daily use I would take it to an upholsterer. Home sewing machines are not made to put heavy-duty thread through or advance heavy fabrics through. Mom burned out her very expensive Viking doing upholstery.

You may get it to work for a while, but it’s hard on the machine.

That said there’s a lot of upholstery you can do with no sewing. If that’s the case, have at it!

  2. You can’t live without this tool. Makes life so much easier when you screw up placing staples.

  3. If you’ve never upholstered try to keep cushions square instead of curved. That said, soften the lines and edges with cotton batting.

  4. Buttons are awesome. Make sure they are heavy duty.

  5. Consider the size of your upholstered part when selecting the fabric. If you are doing a small cushion, choose fabric that has a pattern small enough to see in its entirety. Choose large patterns for large areas. Also consider the direction of the pattern if it has a lot of lines. Make sure you buy enough fabric so that you can run it the way it’s supposed to go.

  6. Mom used one of these to cut foam. So easy and you can shape foam with it, too.
