Lol your story sounds similar to mine. Lately I've started putting a conscious effort into how I dress and this is what I've found. I'm 5'9", 165#:

  • slim fit stuff usually fits better than "classic" or whatever. Just because it says slim fit, doesn't mean skinny jeans.

  • I used to basically only have jeans. I've learned Chino pants are great (again, 'slim fit') to get away from the hard, standard, look of jeans. It took me awhile to find a pair I like, but found out Calvin Klein makes a pair that I love. Seen here ( https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07D9D3J4J/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_bh2jDbD0BZC97 ). I run a size 32x30 and they fit great.

  • if/when you buy jeans, get them tailored so they fit right. Off-the-shelf jeans are kinda like stock photos. You can use em, but you're gonna have to make them yours for anyone to care/notice. I recommend a slight taper and they shouldnt overhang your shoes or drag on the ground. Just take em to the tailor. They'll know what to do and it costs a total of $10ish. It's worth it.

  • shoes : for the longest time, I wore old vans or low-top Adidas until they wore out, and that was IT. Chukkas changed that. I have a couple pair of chukkas in muted colors and 1 pair in black. The black pair gets compliments all the time and was actually the cheapest of the bunch from journeys for $40ish. They have a mature look, but also very casual. They look especially good with Chino pants.

I'm still figure out tops/shirts to wear. I'm trying not to become polo guy, but not sure what other options there are for summer that aren't t-shirts.
