Thanks! I made the late-night drive here for a family member's birthday party, and didn't think I'd have time to photograph, so didn't bring my real gear. Still kicking myself for that stupid decision. I just brought a small waterproof point-and-shoot for use during tubing (https://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Waterproof-Stabilized-Wide-Angle/dp/B0075SUKIC). But it did the job OK, though I had to do more post-processing work than I would have otherwise.

I've shot with Canons most of my adult life, and with point and shoots at that...only got a DSLR in the last couple of years. My favorite camera ever was a Canon Powershot SD1000. Here's one used on ebay for under $100. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-ELPH-SD1000-Digital-IXUS-70-7-1-MP-Digital-Camera-/151071427429?_trksid=p3284.m263&_trkparms=algo%3DSIC%26its%3DI%26itu%3DUCI%252BUA%252BP%252BFICS%252BUFI%252BIIUM%26otn%3D21%26pmod%3D150830697512%26ps%3D54
That camera takes great shots with great color, wonderful macros (close ups), long exposures for night photos, some simple videos, and possibly the best feature for such an old camera, time lapse videos. I used that for sunsets, sunrises, and everything in between. It's tiny, packs into the smallest pockets...the list goes on. These days Canon makes a water/shock/freeze/dust proof camera that's only a little bigger than the SD1000. http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Waterproof-Stabilized-Wide-Angle/dp/B0075SUKIC I'd get one if I didn't already have a waterproof D10. Good luck, and as you've found out, there are a zillion sites online where you can learn the craft. Happy shooting.

Kid cameras are usually garbage, not worth purchasing. They've just recently gone above 1MP, but are still easily $50.

Instead, I'd probably go with something like a Canon PowerShot D20 that's waterproof to 10m and designed to withstand 1.5m drops. It's around $200-$250, so not cheap, but it's a good camera in its own right. If he didn't end up using it for long, I'd be happy using it myself.

If you go with regular point-and-shoot cameras, expect them to be mostly disposable. Go into it expecting it to be broken the instant you hand it to him, and you won't be disappointed if he surprises you and it lasts years.
