I would suggest some of these: analog/digital solar-atomic AWGM100, digital solar-atomic GW-6900, solar with compass/thermo G-9300 Mudman, or a digital solar with neg. display GR-8900A. All of them have solar charging. Some of the first options sync with the atomic time signal and do not have to be set (if in range of the signal). They are all classic black and are fairly large. Should be able to take any kind of abuse they can throw at it. I hope this helps. If not, you may check out he WUS forum for g-shocks.

I have this watch which is 50mm and is too large on my 6.6inch wrists.

I bought it in 2013. It's solar powered. The battery holds a charge for maybe 2 days and then the watch dies so I have to leave it out to charge in light just FYI. The battery needs to be replaced but I haven't bothered with it yet.

>you want an item that can work for [life]. This almost always means a good quality, expensive mechanical watch that is worth enough to warrant getting repaired in the future,

You can't be serious with that can you? I would bet you any amount of money on a longevity test between this watch and any mechanical watch money can buy.

Your very expensive mechanical watches might be well engineered masterworks of craftsmen and artisans, etc. But don't try to pretend they are good at keeping time. Nor are they anywhere as reliable as a solid state device.
