My recommendation is storage cubes like these We've used them a bunch and they work great for most anything (clothes, books, games, knick knacks)

I've seen a lot of really neat stashes organized on bookshelves or cube shelf/oraganizers. They look fantastic, I don't use this method because I've got a one year old who likes to steal yarn and unwind the skeins. So currently all of my yarn is thrown into a large storage tub that clamps shut.
I also haven't used my ball winder in a long time because the spawn has stolen and hidden the power cord. But when I had ball winder balls that seemed weak, I'd throw them in a sandwich baggy, that way if they did collapse they wouldn't get tangled with everything else in my stash.
There are a lot of things like that, and they vary a lot in terms of price and visual style: closet organizer, closet shelving system, closet kit, shelf cube storage... Hopefully one of those is along the lines of what you were looking for.
