What's the wood he'll be splitting like? If it's thinner pieces of pine or straight grained hardwood without many knots, then a smaller splitting axe will do fine. I like my Husqvarna, it's quite a lot cheaper than something like a Gransfors and similar in quality for a splitter. If they're big, knotty hardwoods like hickory, he's going to need a maul. You can pick pretty much any maul you want, they're all predicated on the idea of using a big heavy head which makes craftsmanship less important.

If you're not sure about the wood, I would get [this. ](Condor Tool & Knife, German Style Splitting Axe, American Hickory Handle With Sheath https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004WMFMEQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_xTECzb0C0R90W) It's a nice mix of the two concepts and should be workable in either situation.
